SYPNOSIS

A. ARCHETYPE
ANALYSIS AND
REAL-LIFE
ADAPTATION
SYNOPSIS:

Original Fairy-tale name: Thumbelina

(Hans Christian Anderson)

Thumbelina, a tulip-born girl, lives in a walnut shell. One day, a

frog discovers her and attempts to marry her son. Thumbelina
escapes with the help of a fish and butterfly, but is
apprehended by a stag beetle. Fearing her survival, she is
offered shelter by a field-mouse. Despite her fear, she refuses
to marry her mole neighbor and flees to a distant location. She
meets a flower fairy prince who falls in love with her.
Thumbelina transforms into Maia and joins her husband on his
flower-related adventures.

Archetype: The Quest

The fairytale's archetype is the quest, as it follows a small girl

on her journey to find a magnificent treasure, confronting evil,
finding happiness, and ultimately living happily ever after with
her husband. The story evokes feelings of fear, loneliness,
surprise, and empathy, reminding the audience that kindness
will always pay off in society and that we should practice
kindness and help others.

02
SCREENPLAY PROPOSED TITLE:
TRANSCENDENCE
OF ELINA

Genre: Arthouse, Fantasy

Logline: Always lives mediocrely as a small girl, ELINA started to

explore her fantastical world after being kidnapped by an old man.

Pitch paragraph/summary: ELINA, a beautiful, small girl from a

wealthy family, has an obsession with the light around her. One day, a
BOGEYMAN notices her asleep and takes her away. Despite the man's
attempts to force her to marry his son, ELINA defies him and escapes
with a cat and a parrot. (First dream)

In a new city, ELINA encounters a boy who dumps her due to his
friends' contempt. She struggles to find work and housing, but a
RESTAURANT OWNER offers her shelter and proposes marriage to
her neighbor, a JERK. Despite the owner's pressure, ELINA dismisses
the idea. (Second dream)

ELINA flees to a distant region with the cat and the parrot she aided.
She meets a FLOWER BOY who matches her size and they marry.
Changing her name to MAIA, she travels with her husband. However,
during their wedding, they meet the BOGEYMAN again and run away.
The FLOWER BOY tells ELINA to meet him in another world. (Third
dream). Suddenly, she wakes up realizing it was just a dream and
decides to find the truth in her mundane life.

Conclusion: After completing her adventurous journey, she lived

happily ever after with her lover, realizing her experiences were just
dreams and embarking on a quest for truth.

B. TYPE TREATMENT
For the context, genre, and theme of 'Transcendence of
Elina,' UTMTimesBold Italic and DM Serif Display would be
an ideal font combination.
1. DM Serif Display

Transcendence of Elina

Image 1: The application of DM Serif Display in the movie

title scene of ‘Transcendence of Elina’ title sequence.

DM Serif Display is a transitional face with a high contrast.

The design has been designed for use in super-sized poster
contexts, with delicate serifs and subtle detailing (Google
Fonts, n.d.). Therefore, DM Serif Display is appropriate for
titles of the movie as they need to be large so that the
audience could focus on. Also, the details of the fonts align
with the main character, Elina and the Flower Boy,
contributing to the poetic and mysterious elegance
displayed in the movie.

Secondly, Serif fonts, like Times New Roman, are a

professional and historical style, used by reputable
institutions like the New York Times for over a century
(Adobe, n.d.). Thus, it would match the theme while
maintaining the aesthetics of the movie.

2. UTMTimesBold Italic

Image 2: The application of UTMTimesBold Italic in a scene

of ‘Transcendence of Elina’ title sequence.

UTM Times Bold Italic is the font subfamily identification of

the font family UTM Times (Dafont, n.d.). Italicization is used
for subtle emphasis, whereas bold is used for stronger
emphasis (UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS, n.d.). The combination
of these two elements in this font would be appropriate for
the credits list of the oppening title sequence. UTM Times
Bold Italic has serif that makes it look more firm and the
italicization have a certain "elegant touch" in the font. The
same as the main character Elina, who has a strong heart that
will overcome all the difficulties and end up find her true love.
As a result, it partially supports the film's message, which
advocates for women's willingness to struggle for their
independence and happiness.

09
B. TYPE TREATMENT

3. Typography treatment

The two fonts will be thick enough to be seen clearly in the

illustration-filled space. White will be used to contrast with
dark background colors and vice versa. To demonstrate the
hierarchy, the secondary texts (typed in UTMTimes Bold Italic)
will be smaller than the primary ones.

Black and White colors will be applied to the typography

design. Specifically, dark creates an death-is-coming feeling,
while white would symbolize purity and lightness (Wegman &
Said, 2011). They could represent the protagonist's contrast
route of leaving her two depressing, abusive marriages and
eventually landing in her peaceful, liberated life.
