Year 9

Commercial Music for TV Advertisement

Name:

Class:

Teacher: Miss Osbourne

Project Overview

This project focuses on how the media uses music to help

promote products for sale and stimulates a target
audience to go out and buy the product.

We will learn about different musical devices, genres and

structures which are frequently used in popular
adverts to make them appealing and informative.

Learning Objectives for this project:

• To develop an understanding of why music is used to

enhance adverts.
• To compare and critique TV/Radio adverts against a
specific criteria to test for successfulness.
• To diversify your musical tastes through listening to
many adverts to pick up handy tips and ideas for your
own composition.
• To design, create and promote a new product using
adverts.
• To deliver your product and advert through a
presentation.
How the project breaks down:

• Week 1 – Explore what makes a successful advert and how

they are designed to suit the needs and views of a target
audience.

• Week 2 – Explore how broadcasting is used to promote

products and why it is crucial to the success of products on
sale.

• Week 3 – Exploring the simplistic piece of music which

constitutes a ‘Jingle’. Begin to create a product and develop a
promotional campaign.

• Week 4 – Continue to develop your product and in groups

begin to use musical ideas to create your advert. Write your
script. Your ideas will be marked at this point.

• Week 5 – Review of your progress so far. Think about what is

going well and what is still to be achieved. Continue with your
product promotion.

• Week 6 – Assessment of your Adverts and a short presentation

of your product to the class. These will be peer-assessed and
teacher assessed.
