1.Express the rate of the following reactions:


i) PCl5  PCl3 + Cl2 ii) 2NO2  2NO + O2
in terms of the concentrations of reactants and products.
2. Ammonia and oxygen react at high temperature as: 4NH3 (g) + 5O2 (g)  4NO (g) + 6H2O (g) In an
experiment, rate of formation of NO is 3.6  10-3 mol L-1 s-1. Calculate (i) rate of disappearance of
ammonia, (ii) rate of formation of water.
3.(a) Calculate the overall order of a reaction, which has the rate expression:
(i) Rate = k [A]1/2 [B]3/2 (ii) Rate = k [A]3/2 [B]-1
(b) The reaction A + B  C has zero order. Write rate equation.
4. Write the units of the rate constant for a nth order reaction. Deduce from this the units of rate
constant for a (i) half order reaction (ii) 3/2th order reaction (iii) third order reaction.
5. State the order with respect to each reactant and overall order for the following reaction:
C2H5Cl (g)  C2H4 (g) + HCl (g) Rate = k[C2H5Cl]
CH3CHO (g)  CH4 (g) + CO (g) Rate = k[CH3CHO]3/2
3NO (g)  N2O (g) + NO2 (g) Rate = k[NO]2
What are the dimensions of rate constant in each case?
6. The rate law for a reaction of A, B and C has been found to be rate = k [A] [B] [C] 2. How would the
rate of reaction change when?
(i) Concentration of C is doubled (ii) concentration of A is halved
(iii) Concentration of both B and C are doubled (iv) concentration of each of A, B and C are tripled?

9. Identify the reaction order from each of the following rate constants:

10.A reaction is second order with respect to a reactant. How is the rate of reaction affected if the
concentration of the reactant is
(i) doubled (ii) reduced to ½?
11. For the reaction 2A + B + C  A2 B + C The rate law has been found to be
Rate = k [A] [B]2 with k = 2.0  10-6 mol-2 L2 s-1 For this reaction, determine the initial rate of reaction
with [A] = 0.1 mol L-1, [B] = 0.2 mol L-1, [C] = 0.8 mol L-1. Determine the rate after 0.04 mol L-1 of A has
been reacted.
12.The decomposition of N2O5 at 320 K according to the following equation follows first order

reaction: N2O5 (g)  2NO2 (g) + O2 (g) .The initial concentration of N2O5 was 1.24 × 10-2 mol L-1
and that after 60 minutes was 0.20 × 10-2 mol L-1. Calculate the rate constant of the reaction at 320 K.
13. The thermal decomposition of a compound is of first order. If 50% of the compound is
decomposed in 120 minutes, how long will take for 90% of the compound to decompose?

14. The half life for radioactive decay of C is 5730 year. An archaeological artefact contained wood
