It asked them to select what they believed the most important characteristics a person could have were. A list of ten words was provided. The words were kindness, imagination, determination, optimism, bravery, compassion, honor, loyalty, fairness, and tact. Survey takers were asked to rank all of the words on a scale from one to ten. They were not permitted to choose other words, but they were asked to leave comments. The characteristic that came in number one overall was loyalty, 22% ofthe survey takers voted it fr ‘number one. One comment, by reader J Sullivan, “A person needs to be loyal to himself and others. I can't imagine any other characteristics being more important than loyalty.” The second-most important characteristic was optimism. Roughly 14% of people selected it. Many comments about it were like the one submitted by T. Watson, who wrote, “Optimism is what helped humans fly to the moon and defeat all kinds of diseases. We believed we could do these things, so we did them.” Interestingly, the word that came in last in the survey was tact. Only 3% of the survey takers voted for it for the number-one position. “I don't want people to be tactful around me,” wrote H. Harper. “I want them to tell me exactly what they'e thinking.
