BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Sheet metal

Sheet metal is the most important part in a switchboard.

■ Keep the switchboard room clean and the door closed to prevent dust entry.

■ The sheet metal frame provides:

□ protection against dust and water, as well as protection to the operators

from touching live parts.

□ protection against arc-flash, overvoltage caused by short circuit or internal

arc.

□ isolation between devices, busbar, and conductors.

■ The sheet metal increases the dynamic stability during short circuit.

The sheet metal should:

■ be free from stain, grease, dust or condensation (causing decreased

insulation effect).

■ have no burning traces or crack (it will lower the mechanical strength and the
capability to withstand short circuit).

If the sheet metal is not maintained regularly, there is a possibility of the sheet
metal getting tarnished. If the grease, stain or cracks on the surface of the
sheet metal is not discovered in time.

During preventive maintenance, operators must check the status of the sheet
metal by visual inspection.

■ An extractor must be used to remove dust. A clean dry cloth or brush free
from any kind of solvent must be used for cleaning.

■ If burning traces or cracks are observed, related parts must be replaced.

Care should be taken so as to ensure that the original performance is not
impacted.

■ If a part gets deformed, the operator must evaluate the clearance and
creepage distance. If there is an impact, the deformed part must be replaced.

In all cases, the cubicle must be thoroughly cleaned, especially the bottom of
the cubicle.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Ventilation

Ventilation of the cubicle is important for efficient functioning of busbars and

PD405098

devices. If ventilation is blocked by dust or other foreign matter, the ordinary

derating of busbars and devices may be severely affected. The fan filters and
ventilation grids must be cleaned to help the air to circulate in the cubicle,
thereby avoiding overheating.

The following checks are essential for the maintenance of insulation materials:

■ Check whether there is a breakage to the ventilation part. Replace the

ventilation part, if damaged.

■ Ensure that the ventilation parts are dust-free. An extractor must be used to
remove dust.

■ Fan filters and ventilation grids need to be cleaned regularly. Replace the
parts, if damaged.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Insulation material

Insulation materials provide insulation for conductors between phases, to

withstand the short time overvoltage. Too much dust on insulating materials may
generate partial discharges that may ultimately cause dielectric flashover or
internal arcs.

The following checks are essential for the maintenance of insulation materials:

■ To clean the dust on insulating materials, operators must use an extractor.

For parts that are difficult to access, use a dry cloth, ensuring that there is no
accumulated dust on the insulating materials.

■ Check that there is no foreign matter, corona or partial discharge. Also check
for breakages on the insulation material.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide IP protection

According to the requirements of the project, BlokSeT provides protection

degree up to IP54. Gasket is used in certain positions of the cubicle in order to
maintain different IP. The gasket maybe damaged because of the aging of glue
as well as frequent operation on certain parts. Missing or deshaping of gasket
may result in the failure of protection against dust and water. Deforming of
sheet metal may also be a potential cause of losing IP protection.

Below methodologies are used to analyze whether there is a certain risk on the
IP protection:

■ Visually inspect to check whether the gasket is peeled-off or damaged.

■ Visually inspect for presence of water inside the cubicle.

■ Use the respective IP probe to test the gap or space based on IP

requirement. Example: Use IP4X probe, if IP42 is required.

■ Visually inspect for deformed sheet metal close to the gasket.

In order to ensure IP protection of cubicles:

■ Replace the gasket if it is peeled-off or damaged.

■ Replace any deformed sheet metal parts.

■ Check for missing or damaged IP42/IP54 accessories and replace as

required.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Distribution system

The efficient operation of a busbar is very important, otherwise it may result

in overheating and failure to withstand a short circuit, causing an irreversible
damage to the cubicle.

Ensure that there is no potential risk to the distribution busbar based on three
main aspects:

■ Visually check for deformation on the busbar.

■ Visually check for cracks on the epoxy coating (only in case of epoxy
busbars).

■ Visually check for varnish mark on bolts. If not aligned, replace the hardware.

Below operations ensure proper maintenance of a busbar system:

■ An extractor must be used for the dust removal. A clean dry cloth or brush
free from any kind of solvent must be used for cleaning.

■ It is recommended to check the torque value (provided in the table) for all the
joints.

■ Replace the busbar as well as the insulator and support channel, in case of a
deformed or damaged busbar.

■ Check for varnish marks on the cable terminations, fish plate joints, and
terminal joints.

Note: In case of difficulty in accessing the joints, use appropriate tools.

Tightening torque
Bolt Diameter Tightening Torque (Nm)
M6 13
M8 28
M10 50
M12 75

NOTICE
■ Torque requirements may vary with the type of material used. For example,
the torque for plastic items such as busbar supports and connection clamps
may be different from other sheet metal parts.
■ Ensure that the plastic parts must never come in contact with grease.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Power circuits for fixed type function units

The connection between the distribution system (busbar, cable) and the
functional unit is an important source of heat dissipation. Any tightening that
does not conform to the recommendation can cause a thermal issue resulting in
degradation of the device, insulating materials, and cables, resulting in a short
circuit or fire.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Power circuits for withdrawable type function
units

The maintenance of withdrawable type functional units needs more attention.

The withdrawable connection consists of lock mechanism and plug-in
connectors which requires cleaning and lubrication to ensure the proper
rack-in and rack-out. This type of connection requires appropriate cleaning in
accordance with certain procedures (Refer page # 28 for reference file).

■ Dust removal: An extractor must be used. Do not use compressed air for this
operation.

■ Cleaning – Degreasing. A clean dry cloth or brush free from any kind of
solvent must be used for this operation.

■ Lubrication: Greases recommended by Schneider Electric must be used.

Never apply too much grease, because excessive greasing combined with dust
can cause mechanical misbehavior.

■ Operation: Regular operation is necessary to maintain the original

performance of the connections. Although the aging process of a device may
be accelerated if it is used too frequently, mechanical misbehaviour may occur
if it is not operated for a long period of time.

■ Check the condition of the rollers and skates on the drawers. Make sure, they
are in good condition.

BlokSeT Operations to be performed
Maintenance Guide Auxiliary circuits

Auxiliary wiring is used to transmit orders to the various control units of the
devices and retrieve its states.

A degraded connection or insulating material may block the device from

operating or cause unwanted tripping. Auxiliary wiring connection must be
checked at regular intervals, especially in the event of vibrations, a high
ambient temperature or corrosive atmosphere.

Below operations are needed during the maintenance of auxiliary circuits:

■ Check whether the auxiliary wiring is loose or lost connection.

■ Check whether the surface of wiring is damaged.

■ Check whether cables have proper insulation.

■ Check physical damage of the auxiliary plugs and in case they need to be
replaced.

■ Check for the free movement of auxiliary plugs.
