1. General
 The following tests must only be carried out in dry and well-ventilated premises. For the
testing equipment required, refer to the “SPECIAL TOOLS, FIXTURES AND EQUIPMENT
MATERIALS” section.
 Use a source of compressed air free of oil and humidity and fitted with a 20 micron filter.

2. Tests

A. Overpressure test
This test must be done before the leakage test. After the test, no deterioration in the seams
or in the fabric must be noted.
 Appl.A
1 - Remove the CO2 cylinder, the inflator assembly and the inflator sheath and in their
place fit an inflation connector;
2 - Inflate the buoyancy chamber up to 420hPa;
3 - Readjust the pressure after 30 seconds;
4 - After 5 minutes, the pressure must not be below 400hPa. If it is, look for the cause
and refer to the “REPAIR” section;
5 - Remove the inflation connector and deflate the buoyancy chamber with a vacuum
pump or a vacuum cleaner;
CAUTION : AVOID THE CREATION OF WRINKLES DURING DEFLATION.

6 - Fit and tighten the inflator sheath, the inflator assembly and the CO2 cylinder.

B. Leakage test

(1). Proceed in the same way as for the overpressure test, complying with the following test
conditions:
 12 hours after overpressure test.
 Test pressure: 140hPa.
 Result: after 12 hours the corrected pressure must not be below 105hPa. The
corrected pressure takes variations in atmospheric pressure and temperature into
account :
 Correct the pressure reading as follows :
b  273
Pc = (c  e )  a
d  273
a:
Initial barometric pressure (hPa)
b:
Initial temperature (°C)
c:
Final barometric pressure (hPa)
d:
Final temperature (°C)
e:
Final pressure in the buoyancy chamber
(pressure gauge reading ,hPa)
NOTE : Alternative : reduce final pressure by 4 hPa if temperature is increased by 1°C
(4hPa increase by 1°C drop) and adjust this pressure in case of variation of
atmospheric pressure during test (e.g. –1hPa if atmospheric pressure drop
by 1 hPa)

(2). The Life jackets that do not pass this test will be reinflated to 140hPa and immersed in
clear water (or moistened using leak detector fluid) in order to locate the leak. Repair in
accordance with the “REPAIR” section and repeat the test.

INSPECTION/CHECK

1. General
Checks must only be carried out by qualified operators (Authorities agreement).
It is the date of manufacture of the life jacket that must be used as the starting date for regular
checks.

2. Content and frequency of checks

In order, checking consists of:

(a). An inspection of the buoyancy chambers and components.

(b). An overpressure test (refer to the "TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION" section).

(c). An air tightness test (refer to the "TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION" section).
AERAZUR recommends frequencies of:
 Appl.A: 2 to 4 years with local agreement if over 2 years
 Appl.B, C and D: 5 years

3. Inspection of the buoyancy chambers and components

NOTE : For the testing equipment required, refer to the "SPECIAL TOOLS, FIXTURES AND
EQUIPMENT MATERIALS" section.

A. Examine the fabric parts (buoyancy chamber, belt, etc.). A bitter smell, too much shine or
hardening indicate that the fabric has deteriorated through ageing. Check that there is no
wear, soiling or distortion.

B. Check the integrity of the welded and sewn seams.

C. Porosity in the fabric of the buoyancy chamber will show up during the air tightness test
(refer to the "TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION" section).

D. Check that the markings can be easily read.

E. Check the fastening and correct operation of the belt buckle.

F. Check that there is no corrosion and that the mechanical parts operate correctly and freely
(inflator lever, insertion of the CO2 cylinder onto the inflator, threaded end of the CO2
cylinder).

G. Examine the mouthpiece, for cracks or any other form of deterioration. Check that the non-
return valve moves freely.
Partially inflate the buoyancy chamber and immerse the inflation tube in water to check for
leaks at the mouthpiece.
Dry the mouthpiece, taking care not to introduce water into the buoyancy chamber.
Change a defective mouthpiece.

H. Examine the CO2 cylinder.

(1). Check that the welded seal is in good condition (no chafing). If the cap shows
considerable bulging, scrap the CO2 cylinder and replace it with a new one. As the CO2
cylinders are sealed, it is not necessary to check their weight.

(2). However, if in doubt, weigh the CO2 cylinder and compare it with the minimum
permitted weight engraved on the body.

I. Examine the rescue light system.

(1). Check that there are no cracks, impacts or swelling of the battery. Check that the
electrical connecting wire and the lamp are in good condition.
A distorted battery casing will indicate that the battery has been damaged by water or
humidity and is therefore unusable. Measure the thickness of the battery case: 12.06
mm maximum.

(2). Checking the lamp

Use the checking equipment.
Put the two probes of the equipment in contact with the two strands of the electrical
wire: the lamp should light.

In both cases (lamp inoperative and casing too thick) scrap the system and replace it with a
new rescue light system.

J. Check the non-return devices

Appl.A (valve core in valve base):

 After removing the inflator, direct a jet of compressed air through the valve base. The
valve core should open and the buoyancy chamber inflate.
 Stop inflating when the buoyancy chamber has taken up its shape.
 The valve core must close and provide a seal (no leaks). If this is not so, unscrew it and
replace it with a new valve core.

Appl.B, C and D (welded inflator):

 Operate in the same way, blowing the compressed air through the CO2 cylinder interface
(inflator lever operated). In the event of a leak, change the buoyancy chamber.

K. After checking:
Appl.A
Replace the inflator with new seals and lock the inflator lever using linen thread.
Check the tightness of the cap of the valve core (0.2 to 0.3 daN.m).
Appl.B, C and D
Return the inflator lever to the normal position and fit a new safety clip together with
a new cylinder seal.
Replace the cylinder and tighten it firmly by hand (it must not unscrew using two
fingers).

L. Check if the whistle is in good order (model C10 F).

M. Check that the strips of double-sided adhesive tapes are in good condition.
Change the strips if necessary.

REPAIR

1. General
 Generally speaking it is preferable to replace defective parts rather than to repair them;
 However, according to circumstances, the following repairs can be carried out in
approved workshops;
 If there is any doubt as to the local workshop's repair capability, it is recommended that
the life jacket is returned to the manufacturer ;
 All repaired life jackets must be checked and tested before being put into service (refer to
the "CHECKING" section).

2. Scope of repairs

A. Buoyancy chamber
Repairs are limited to punctures and tears under 30 mm, located at least 30 mm from
seams.
The number of these repairs is limited to three per buoyancy chamber. The procedure is
described below.

B. Removable components:
The following components are repaired by replacing them:
 carrying bag;
 mouthpiece;
 rescue light system;
 CO2 cylinder;
 inflator (Appl.A);
 inflator sheath (Appl.A);
 valve core (Appl.A);
 whistle (C10 F).

C. Non-removable parts;
Scrap the life jacket if there are any faults in the following equipment:
 Belt;
 Inflator (Appl.B, C and D).

3. Repair
For the testing equipment required, refer to the "SPECIAL TOOLS, FIXTURES AND
EQUIPMENT MATERIALS" section.

A. Repairing the buoyancy chamber

(1). Bonding procedure

(a). General

 Refer to the operating instructions on adhesive container;

 Carry out bonding in well-ventilated premises, dry and in a relative humidity

below 60 %;

 Do not introduce any solvent or adhesive into the interior of the buoyancy
chamber;

 Change the solvent and the cloth when they are dirty;

 Do not touch the surfaces after cleaning. The presence of any parasite material
risks causing poor bonding. For the same reasons, do not leave the cleaned
surfaces in the open air for more than a few minutes;

 Avoid air currents that cause the condensation of atmospheric humidity onto
bonded areas (due to the accelerated evaporation of the solvents).
