MALIN KUNDANG
Long time ago there lived in West Sumatra, a poor widow with her son named Malin Kundang,
Everyday they went to the forest to look for the firewood to sell Malin Kundang was not satisfied with
their life. He wanted to become a rich man. He ask to his mother to let him go city. His mother was
very sad. She let him go away, no matter how much she loved him.
Day by day, year by year, she waited and waited but she never got any news from him. One
day a big ship cast in anchor for the night. The owner of the ship was a rich man called Malin
Kundang. The poor widow was very glad. She went to the ship to met her son. When Malin Kundang
saw an old woman like an old beggar coming to see him, he refused to meet her. He knew that the
old woman was his mother. He scolded her before his men and his beautifu wife.
The old woman was very sad. She cried sorrowfuly and by accident said a curse “Oh God, I
would rather see him become a stone than become a seditious son”. Suddenly, a strong wind blew
violently and sank the ship down not far away from the beach. And miraculously, it turned into a
stone.

THE LEGEND OF TANGKUBAN PERAHU


Long time ago in West Java, lived a woman named Dayang Sumbi. She lived alone in the forest

One day, Dayang Sumbi was quilting when suddenly, her quilt fell off from her house. Then she
prayed to Gods, “If a man picks up my quilt, he will be my husband. If a woman, She will be my sister”.

Then, a male dog picks it up. For keeping her words, Dayang Sumbi married the dog and called him
Tumang. She gave birth to a baby, named him Sangkuriang, but never told him who his father was.

One day, Sangkuriang was hunting with Tumang in the forest and he found nothing. He blamed
Tumang for the failure and killed him. When Dayang Sumbi knew that, she hit Sangkuriang’s head
with a big spoon and asked him to go away.

Many years later, the wandering Sangkuriang found a house in the forest. The woman, Dayang Sumbi
recognized the adventurer as Sangkuriang. Sangkuriang forced her to marry him and Dayang asked
him to make a vast boat in one night.

In the night, Sangkuriang called his friend, ghost and forest fairies to help him. Dayang Sumbi feared
the boat could be finished on time, so she asked some women nearby to help her.

The women hit the grains with grain puncher to make noise which disturbed the ghost and the fairies.
The ghost and the fairies ran away before completing the boat.

Sangkuriang was very angry, he kicked away the boat upside down and it turned into a mountain
called Tangkuban Perahu.

It means the downside boat, which stood in the north of Bandung.

Once upon a time, in a river in East Java, there lived a shark named Sura and a crocodile named
Baya. Both were strong and fierce creatures, and they often fought over prey.

Their battles always ended in a draw, and no one won or lost. Finally, they decided to make peace.
They made an agreement to divide their territory. Sura would rule the water, while Baya would rule the
land.

The agreement worked well for many years. Sura and Baya lived side by side in peace. However, one
day, Sura broke the agreement. He caught a fish in the river, which was Baya’s territory.

Baya was furious. He chased Sura and challenged him to battle again. Sura had no choice but to
fight.

Their second battle was even more fierce than the first. They fought for hours and both were badly
injured. In the end, Sura managed to defeat Baya. He bit Baya’s neck and killed him.

Baya’s death brought peace to the Surabaya River. Sura became the sole ruler of the river, and he
never broke the agreement again.

From this story, the name Surabaya comes from the words “Sura” which means brave and “Baya”
which means danger. The name represents the bravery of the people of Surabaya in the face of
danger.

Borobudur temple is one of the most beautiful tourist resorts in Indonesia. It is located in Central Java.
Borobudur temple is one of the seven wonders in the world which needs to be preserved its
circumstances. The people all over the world know that Borobudur is one of the greatest art works that
ever known since long time ago.
Borobudur temple was built by Syailendra Dynasty during the eighth century. It needed more than two
million river stones. It is the biggest temple in the world.

After going into some restorations, Borobudur is visited by more and more tourists, both domestic and
foreign tourists. Most of them admire Borobudur temple because of its beauty, its elegance and the
story of the relief on its wall.

Domestic tourists usually go there by bus or private cars, while foreign tourists like to join travel
because they don’t need to think of the transportation, accommodation and itinerary. There are some
money changers around the location. It makes them easier to change their money. But some of them
like to bring credit cards and checks.

NATIONAL MONUMENT
The National Monument or “Monas” as it is popularly called, is one of the monuments built during the
Sukarno era of fierce nationalism. The top of National Monument (Monas) is Freedom Square. It
stands for the people’s determination to achieve freedom and the crowning of their efforts in the
Proclamation of Independence in August 1945. The 137 meter tall marble obelisk is topped with a
flame coated with 35 kg of gold. The base houses a historical museum and a hall for meditations. The
monument is open to the public and upon request the lift can carry visitors to the top, which offers a
bird’s eye view on the city and the sea.

Go early to beat the crowds and the haze. It is easy for the less physically able as lifts take visitors to
the top. The diorama exhibition in the basement gives such a distorted view of Indonesian history.

This imposing obelisk is Jakarta’s most famous landmark. Construction started in 1961 under
President Soeharto. The monument houses a couple of museums. The Freedom Hall depicts
Indonesia’s struggle for independence through a series of dioramas, whereas the Hall of
Contemplation displays the original Declaration of Independence document and a recording of the
speech.

Pink Beach or Pantai Merah Muda is one of the beaches in Komodo Island, East Nusa Tenggara. The
beach is called Pink Beach because the sand beach is pink. The pink color of its beach is a mixture of
white sand beach colors mixed with crushed coral, shells, calcium carbonate from marine
invertebrates that are very small, and also foraminifera, microscopic amoeba that has a red body shell.

At Pink Beach, there are so many marine organisms. No fewer than 1.000 species of fish, 260 species
of coral, and 70 species of sponge can be found here. Having so much marine life, this place is a
proper spot for snorkeling and diving for sea sports lovers.

Way Kambas National Park is a national park for elephant sanctuary located in Lampung precisely in
the Labuhan Ratu sub district, East Lampung, Indonesia. Way Kambas National Park is established in
1985, is the first school for elephant in Indonesia. In the beginning of its establish, Way Kambas
National Park was named the Elephant Training Center/Pusat Latihan Gajah (PLG), but the last few
years this name was changed into Elephant Conservation Center/Pusat Konservasi Gajah (PKG)
whish is expected to become a center for elephant conservation in taming, training, breeding and
conserving elephants. Until now, this PKG has trained for about 300 elephants which have been
deployed to all over the country.

In Way Kambas National Park, there are some endangered animals such as Sumatran Rhinos,
Sumatran elephants, Sumatran Tiger, Mentok Rimba, and Buaya Sepit. There are also so some
plants which are mostly found there such as api-api, Pidada, Nipah, and Pandan. On the mashy
coasts of Way Kambas National Park is often found various species of birds, such as Lesser Adjutant,
Pheasant Blue, Kuau Raja, Pependang timur and some other birds.

The Suramadu Bridge (Jembatan Suramadu)

The Suramadu Bridge (Indonesian: JembatanSuramadu), also known as the Surabaya–Madura


Bridge, is a bridge with three cable-stayed sections constructed between Surabaya on the island of
Java and the town of Bangkalan on the island of Madura in Indonesia. Opened on June 10, 2009, the
5.4-km bridge is the longest in Indonesia and the first bridge to cross the Madura Strait.

The cable-stayed portion has three spans with lengths 192 m, 434 m and 192 m. The bridge has two
lanes in each direction plus an emergency lane and a dedicated lane for motorcycles. The first toll
bridge in Indonesia, fares have been initially set at Rp. 30,000 (US$3 in 2009) for four-wheeled
vehicles and Rp. 3,000 (US$0.30) for two-wheelers.

The bridge was built by a consortium of Indonesian companies PT AdhiKarya and PT WaskitaKarya
working with China Road and Bridge Corp. and China Harbor Engineering Co. LtD. The total cost of
the project, including connecting roads, has been estimated at 4.5 trillion rupiah (US$445 million).
