Subject: EDUC 60 Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching

What takeaways have you gained from studying learner-centered teaching in international
perspectives and how would these promote inclusive and culturally responsive practices in
your own teaching?

As a teacher, we are expected to be well-rounded on things. On a common ground level,

we are the source of any form of knowledge and wisdom. The classroom is to be considered to
be a holy place where teachers are expected to know what to do and say. Students attend to
class and expect elaborate instructions from the teachers for them to have a better future. One
single mistake from the teacher (if not being immediately tended), everything could go wrong.

Today, the education system now focuses on putting the students’ differences, needs
and interests first before all things. It is putting on mind that the students’ well-being should be a
top priority, thus in everything that the teacher is expected to do, they are expected to be well-
versed in this new way of educating students. However, the irony of the teachers being the
source of everything yet still following today’s new way of teaching could be tricky since it
stands on a total opposite direction.

This is where the teacher’s wisdom comes to place, that it doesn’t mean putting the
students first – and that is helping them exercise independent learning – means that we as
future teachers should now avoid the responsibility of being a teacher. The teacher’s role has
now evolved these days. We will be more than the source, we will be facilitators and many
more.

In a learner-centered teaching in an international perspective, it is knowing what kind of

delivery is appropriate for each class setting. It does not mean that a certain class delivery
worked on a certain classroom climate, it would work to the other. One way we have to observe
is that education is nationwide, and the possibility of us being assigned to different countries for
training purposes could be likely, and us being teachers are expected to be well-versed of any
possible ways to tend all three requirements in conforming to today’s education system; being
the students source, being the facilitator, and creating an independent environment.

To be a teacher in a learner-centered teaching is to know what appropriate teaching

style that could be used in a certain classroom setting, so that teaching is effective for the
student and the society’s betterment.
