Types of Personal Letters


1. Invitation
By an invitation letter, you invite a friend, a relative, some honorable guest, … to your wedding,
dinner, graduation, birthday, etc.
Invitation should be polite, sincere, and attractive.
The answer to an invitation could be positive or negative.
For example:

Dear Sara:
Mother’s birthday is on Thursday, October 26. The whole family is going on a picnic to Munting
Buhangin Beach in Batangas. We would like you to go with us.

before that time. We’ve rented a cottage there; we’ll sleep overnight, and come back in the afternoon of
Friday.

2. Thank-you or Appreciation
In this kind of letter, you thank someone for sending you a gift, providing you with warm hospitality, and
so on.

3. Congratulation
In this kind of letter, you would congratulate someone for marriage, graduation, birthday, etc.

4. Condolence/ Sympathy
When something horrible happens to someone dear to you, for example, a death, you would sympathize
with the bereaved person by sending him / her a condolence letter.

_Social Letters
By social letters, we mean those correspondences that are reciprocated between a person and a
company, an institute, a university, or an organization.
Style
Characteristic:
They are more formal than personal letters.
