RAY OPTICS (Worksheet-1)

1. Three rays (1, 2, 3) of different colours fall normally on one of the sides of an
isosceles right angled prism as shown. The refractive index of prism for
these rays is 1.39, 1.47 and 1.52 respectively. Find which of these rays get
internally reflected and which get only refracted from AC. Trace the paths of
rays. Justify your answer with the help of necessary calculations

2. A ray of light is incident normally on the face AB of a right-angled glass prism of

refractive index aµg = 1.5. The prism is partially immersed in a liquid of unknown
refractive index. Find the value of the refractive index of the liquid so that the ray
grazes along the face BC after refraction through the prism. Trace the path of the
ray if it were incident normally on the face AC.

3. A fish looking from within water sees the outside world through a circular
horizon. If the fish is √7 m below the surface of the water, then calculate the area
of the cross-section of the circular horizon.
4. A glass sphere of radius 20 cm has a small air bubble 5 cm from its centre. The
bubble is seen along the diameter of the sphere on which it lies. How far from the
surface will it appear to be when it is seen (i) from the near end of the diameter
and (ii) the far end of the diameter. Given µ= 1.5.
5. A plano-convex lens of refractive index µ1 and focal length f1 is kept in contact with a
plano-concave lens of refractive index µ2 and focal length f2 as shown in the figure. If the
radius of curvature of the common surface is R, obtain the condition under which the
combination behaves as a (i) converging lens (ii) diverging lens and obtain the expression
for the focal length of the combination.

6.A double convex lens has radii of curvature each of

50cm. Find its focal length in (i) Air (ii) water. Here
refractive index of air =1.5 and refractive index of water=
1.3
