Writing Success: A1 & A1+ to A2
Writing Success: Level A1
Wring Success A1 is designed for postbeginnerlevel young learners of English.
Carefully levelled acvies guide students as they expand their core vocabulary and
gain familiarity with fundamental structures.
The Structure
• Colourful pictures introduce the target vocabulary and provide visual clues to meaning.
Students make their own sentences about the pictures, filling in the gaps with the tar
get vocabulary.
• The Language Box provides simple examples or explanations of the target grammar.
Students can look at the illustrations and complete the dialogues using the target
grammar and vocabulary. They practise using the target grammar through a
comprehension and gapfill activity.
• Students use the pictures as the starting point for completing, then answering questions.
These questions practise comprehension and correct use of grammatical structures.
When they are comfortable with the grammar and vocabulary, students move on to the
next activity where they will write about themselves.
• The general review section recycles some of the key vocabulary and target structures
from earlier units. This provides a great opportunity to familiarise students with the
kinds of questions they will encounter on future tests, such as the Cambridge A1
Movers exam.

want to go on holiday to more unusual places. Maybe they would like to visit Dracula’s Castle in Romania or the Hobbit
Village in New Zealand.” Well, if you ask me these travel destinations do sound strange.
Section 3
Questions 11-15 (Completing sentences)
You must write a word, phrase or number (up to 3 words) from the A When holidays will change
text in a gap to complete each sentence. You must use an exact word B Why travel agents know everything

Paragraph ...............
Section 1: Title Matching Until now, voice-controlled toys capable of operating household appliances were a mere flight of fancy. Now, it seems, toys,
Pre-reading 1 modelled on animated cartoon characters, Buzz Lightyear and Woody, may soon become reality if Google’s recent patent
for voice-responsive Teddy and rabbit-shaped machines is approved. However, Google’s voice-sensitive toys will not
merely flip light switches and drive remote controlled cars, like their cartoon counterparts. In addition to controlling domes-
tic devices like TVs, music systems and lights, they will potentially be capable of interacting with humans; not merely
responding to requests, but additionally, displaying rudimentary emotions, reflecting those of the speaker.
3
Paragraph ...............
Google’s new toy has been trumpeted by its designers as a ‘cute’ home accessory and accordingly marketed in child-friend-
ly forms which may extend to dragons, robots or even aliens to make them more compatible playmates for young chil-
dren. Google suggests that by looking cute, “young children might find these forms to be attractive” and adults would be
more likely to interact more naturally with them than a traditional computer interface. Homes, it suggests, could use one
or a number of such toys spread around the home to facilitate family members and enable them to effortlessly perform
tasks around the house. An added bonus of these toys, claims Google, is that such devices can also store conversations on
the internet and would be permanently listening for instructions from homeowners to which they would respond.
2
Paragraph ...............
It is envisaged that these anthropomorphic devices will be connected to the internet, responding to commands given by
homeowners. Embedded in the devices will be microphones, speakers and cameras, enabling the ‘toys’ to respond to and
execute commands relayed to them upon a simple voice command. In addition, these sophisticated gadgets will feature
motors to change the toys’ facial expressions. Google’s patent suggests that the toy will listen for a trigger word and upon
hearing it will turn to face the speaker. Using cameras, the gadget will then scan the emotional expressions of the person
making eye contact with the toy. It will then respond vocally or adopt a new facial expression to exhibit surprise, for example,
before carrying out domestic chores remotely, such as switching on a washing machine. According to the blurb on the
patent, the device will be able “to express interest, may open its eyes, lift its head and/or focus its gaze on the user”.
Write down as many ideas as you can think of for your answers to these questions. 4
Paragraph ...............
Then, if possible, discuss your notes with a partner. There is a fine line, however, between anthropomorphic wizardry and downright creepiness. Whilst Google might like to
portray the toys as the cute toys in Disney’s Toy Story, some believe that these anthropomorphic devices are more remi-

Edition David
When I think about travelling abroad, I really don‛t like the idea of going
by plane. The airports are usually crowded and there are often delays so
flights aren‛t on time. Before you go, you have to check in online to get your
boarding pass. You might need to arrive at the airport early if you need to
drop your bags off. Then you must show your passport, and if there‛s a lot
of security you might have to hurry not to miss take-off. There‛s also a
chance you might lose your luggage. No thanks! I‛d rather travel around in
my own country to have a better understanding of its history, culture and
landscape.

Teacher’s Book - ISBN: 9781781641026
The Grammar Files series consists of 5 Books, 64 pages each, for CEFR Levels: A1 - A2 - B1 - B2 - C1
Each book at levels A1, A2 and B1 consists of 30 two-page units, that deal with the most important Grammar points.
Each unit starts by briefly introducing the new Grammar point and then students have to practise a variety of exercises.
The Grammar Files can also be used as time fillers; perfect for when teachers have some extra time at the end of
a lesson, or want to revise a specific Grammar point.
Levels B1, B2 and C1 have also been written for students who are planning to take any ELT exam, especially the
IELTS and Cambridge Assessment English exams: A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency.
Although Grammar is not tested directly in most exams, it is, however, tested indirectly throughout, and especially in
the Speaking and Writing sections of any exam. You can gain or lose points based on your command of English
grammar. Therefore, it would help to undertake a general review of English grammar while preparing for any ELT exam.

Student’s Book - ISBN: 9781781640968
Teacher’s Book - ISBN: 9781781640975
The Vocabulary Files series consists of 6 Books, 64 pages each, for CEFR Levels: A1- A2 - B1 - B2 - C1- C2
The aim of the series is to give students the chance to expand their vocabulary in different areas. Each unit deals
with a common Vocabulary topic; the vocabulary is taught through a variety of exercises with lots of illustrations to
make them more lively and interesting.
The Vocabulary Files can also be used as Time Fillers; when teachers have some extra time and they need
something to do to help students revise what they have already been taught. Alternatively, it can also be used to
help weak students enrich their vocabulary in various common topics.
Levels B1, B2, C1 and C2 in this series have also been written for students who are planning to take the IELTS
or the Cambridge Assessment English exams: A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency.
They cover some of the main vocabulary points that IELTS candidates will need for the Listening, Reading, Writing
and Speaking sections of the exam. The vocabulary that students acquire in each of these books will help them to
achieve the score they want in the IELTS exam.
The units in each of these books, focus on topic-specific vocabulary areas, which may be required in various exams
(for example, Economy, Education, Health, etc). Some exercises focus on general vocabulary items, which can be
used in all aspects of the English language. Many of these words are relevant to specific tasks in most ELT exams
(for example, describing how something works, writing a letter or describing a house).

Idioms Dictionary
l Idioms are fairly fixed phrases that consist of more than one
word, with a meaning that, usually, cannot be understood from
putting together the meanings of the individual words.
But this dictionary of approximately 2,000 idioms is different
from other dictionaries of idioms. Such dictionaries often try
to give a complete list of all idioms; in this book we have also
concentrated on phrases that are used in certain conversational
situations.
Learner’s Dictionary
l Restricted defining vocabulary, so students looking up a word
will not find five more they don't know in the definition!
l Up-to-date and international coverage of today's vocabulary.
Special provision for those studying other subjects in English
at the secondary school level (new scientific & technical
entries added in this edition).
l Example sentences for words presenting usage problems.
l Attractive illustrations where appropriate to help students
understand word meanings.
l Guide to pronunciation.
l Help with word formation: prefixes and suffixes.
l Coverage of weights and measures and SI units.
l Useful cross-references to show related words.

It is called the Laughing Country because everything and everyone there is happy. The
river laughs to itself as it moves between its green sides; the wind whistles happily in
the trees; the sunlight dances over the so grass and the wild flowers look smilingly up
towards the sky. To laugh one needs to be happy and in the Laughing Country of Santa
Claus everyone is happy.
On one side is the large Forest of Burzee. At the other side stands the very tall mountain
that contains the Caves of the Daemons. And between them is the Laughing Country
smiling and peaceful.
You might think that our good old Santa Claus, who spends all his days making children
happy, would have no enemies on all the earth; and for a long me he found nothing
but love wherever he went. But the Daemons, who live in the mountain caves, hated
Santa Claus very much just because he made children happy.
There are 5 Caves of the Daemons. A wide path goes up to the first cave which is at the
boom of the mountain. The entrance is beaufully decorated. In it lives the Daemon
of Selfishness. He is called this because he only thinks about himself and doesn’t care
what happens to other people.
Behind this is another cave where the Daemon of Envy lives. He is called this because
he wants all the things that the other people near him have. The cave of the Daemon
of Hatred is next to that and aer this one is the home of the Daemon of Unfriendliness;
in a dark and frightening cave in the middle of the mountain.

“Why, Effie, what a terrible thing to say! You are as bad as old Scrooge; and I’m afraid
something will happen to you, as it did to him, if you don’t care about Christmas,”
answered her mother, almost dropping the silver bag she was filling with delicious
sweets.
“Who was Scrooge? What happened to him?” asked Effie, with sudden interest in her
bored face, as she chose the sourest lemon drop she could find; for nothing sweet
suited her just then.
“He was one of Dickens’ best characters, and you can read this wonderful story some
day. He hated Christmas unl a strange dream showed him how amazing and beauful
it was, and this made a beer man of him.”
“I shall read it; for I like dreams, and have many strange ones myself. But they don’t
stop me being red of Christmas,” said Effie, searching unhappily among the sweets
for something worth eang.
“But why are you red of what should be the happiest me of the year?” asked her
mother, anxiously.
“Perhaps I wouldn’t be if it was different, for once. But it is always the same, and there’s
no surprise in that. I always find lots of goodies in my stocking. I don’t like some of them,
and I soon get red of those I do like. We always have a great dinner, and I eat too
much, and then I feel ill the next day. Then there is always a Christmas tree somewhere,
with a doll on top, or a stupid old Santa Claus, and children dancing and screaming
over sweets and toys that break, and shiny things that are of no use. Really, mum, I’ve
had so many Christmases that were all the same, so I think I can’t cope with another
one.” And Effie laid herself flat on the sofa, as if just the idea of Christmas alone, was
too much for her.

1 Scrooge: A Christmas Story Chapter 1
A Dark Winter’s Afternoon
At this, Bob Cratchit looked up from his work and began to applaud. The smile on his
face disappeared immediately when he saw Scrooge glare at him.
“If I hear another sound from you, you’ll lose your job!” Scrooge cried angrily.
“And as for you, my young nephew, you can celebrate Christmas in your own way,
without me. I hate Christmas. I’m going to stay here and work tomorrow.”
In business he was just as mean. He had started a business with Jacob Marley who had
died seven years earlier. Marley had been as mean with his money as Scrooge, so they
had made a lot of money together but they had made enemies, too. Scrooge didn’t
trust anybody with his money and he watched the people who worked for him care
fully to make sure that they worked hard all the me and didn’t steal from him.
His clerk, Bob Cratchit, knew how mean Scrooge was. He knew beer than to ask
Scrooge if he could have some coal for the fire in his office. Scrooge kept the coal box
in his own office and never gave Bob enough coal to make a real fire. So on this cold
winter’s aernoon, Bob was trying to warm his hands over a candle flame in his dark,
cold room. He was exhausted but sll was working hard as usual.
Today was Christmas Eve and Bob wanted to finish his work so he could leave early.
His family would be waing for him when he got home. This made him feel happy and
he smiled to himself when he thought about the warm welcome he would receive.
How different to the cold, chill, damp office of Ebenezer Scrooge!
Then the door flew open and a cold gust of air came in.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle!” said a cheerful young man. The young man was Fred,
Scrooge’s nephew. He was as happy and joyful as Scrooge was mean and miserable.
“What’s so merry about it? It’s just another day, the same as any other. There are sll
bills to pay,” replied Scrooge.
“Oh, Uncle Scrooge, don’t be so grumpy. Why don’t you come to our house for dinner
tomorrow? There’ll be a warm fire, good company and lots of food. Christmas is meant
to be a happy me when people are kind and forgiving and look aer each other.”
