KWL Chart Students will work in groups to complete a know and wonder chart to assess their prior
knowledge at the beginning of the unit. They will discuss what they know about planet
👍
earth and what they wonder about. I will address some of their related wonders further on
in the unit through the “fun fact” and relate it to the lesson for that day.

Jigsaw/stations Students will work in groups at stations to explore a particular area of a topic and present
their findings to other groups or rotate between stations to uncover different aspects of the
👍
topic.

Performance Task Students will complete an assignment where they are instructed to explore evidence of
land formations and fossils that were recently found/uncovered. They will need to analyze
👍
the evidence and create a report on their findings.

Rock/Mineral Table Students will complete a table as part of their learning for the different characteristics of
rocks and minerals. Students will work in groups of about three people and explore
👍
Experiment
different properties of each rock in their rock set.
Jeopardy Review Before each topic quiz, students will participate in a game of jeopardy to prepare for the
upcoming summative test. This assessment is for me to be able to see if they are
👍
understanding the topics discussed, as well as for the students to study/review what they
have learned throughout the accumulation of science classes

Participation Formative assessments will be completed throughout the course of this unit. Completion
and participation marks will be given based on the student’s effort as well as
👍
comprehension of the material discussed.

Unit Summary Throughout the unit students will complete a unit summary, adding to it along the way.
Components of the unit summary will include:
👍
- Title page
- Info on topic 1/2/3/4 including visuals
- Reflection

Section Quizzes After each section of the material, students will write a quiz to assess their knowledge
throughout that particular section. There will be 4 section quizzes on each of the
👍
following topics:

- Gradual and sudden changes of Earth’s surface

- The rock cycle, how rocks form and change over time
- Landforms as evidence of change
- Fossil record as evidence of Earth’s changes

Topic Key Concepts Section Summary

1 - Earth’s surface ● Developing models ● Earth is viewed as a layered planet. The main
undergoes gradual ● Earth models layers are the crust, the mantle, and the core. Only
and sudden ● Earthquakes the crust has been investigated because Earth’s

other layers are many hundreds of kilometers

studying Earth below its surface.
● The effects of water, ● Earthquakes and volcanoes are examples of
wind, and ice forces that take place within Earth’s interior. These
● Glaciers forces have the ability to suddenly and
dramatically change Earth’s surface.
● Scientists use a variety of tools and techniques to
investigate Earth’s forces.
● Wind, water, and ice are forces that slowly change
Earth’s features

2 - The rock cycle ● Rocks and minerals ● Rocks are the hard structures that make up
describes how ● Classes of rocks: Earth’s crust. They are composed of minerals,
rocks form and igneous, sedimentary, substances that give rocks their distinctive
change over time and metamorphic
characteristics, such as hardness and color

interpreting local rock ● Rocks are always being broken down and
formations transformed into different forms. This process is
called the rock cycle.
● All three classes of rocks can be found in Alberta
although sedimentary rocks are the most common.

3 - Landforms ● Continental drift ● The Theory of Plate Tectonics describes Earth’s

provide evidence ● Plate tectonics surface as being broken up into huge areas of rock
of change ● Mountain building called plates.
● The continents and the ocean floors are carried on
these plates. The plates are slowly moving on the
partly melted mantle.
● Mountains are formed as a result of plates
colliding or rubbing together, pushing up part of the
plate.

4 - The fossil ● Tracing evidence of ● Fossils are traces or remains of past life preserved

evidence remains are often incomplete, much of what is
known is based on inferences.
● Geologists have divided Earth’s history into four
periods, called eras.
● Determining what animals looked like from fossil
records is often based on inferences.
