1.0 Introduction

The Food and Beverage (F&B) and cosmetic industries are integral parts of our daily
lives, contributing significantly to our well-being and personal care. However, these
industries also face various challenges that can impact product quality, safety, and
consumer trust. In this report, we will delve into two current issues, one from the F&B
industry and another from the cosmetic industry, analyzing their backgrounds,
causes, and potential solutions. Additionally, we will explore the role of Good
Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in ensuring the production of quality, safe, and halal
products.

2.0 Overview of the current issue

2.1 F&B Industry Issue

The Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (Jakim) has immediately
suspended the halal certification for two Cadbury chocolate products that were found
to contain porcine (pig) DNA. The Chief Director of Jakim, Datuk Othman Mustapha,
stated that further investigation will be conducted to determine the source of

contamination in the two chocolate samples. The halal certification in Malaysia
involves a stringent auditing and inspection process that evaluates ingredients,

processing methods, equipment, and includes laboratory testing based on Malaysian
Halal Standards and the Manual of Procedures for Halal Certification in Malaysia.
After the issuance of halal certification, the certificate holders are subject to regular
inspections by Jakim. The Malaysian Ministry of Health confirmed the presence of
pig DNA in three samples of Cadbury chocolate, triggering the investigation. The
issue was initially raised on social media regarding the detection of pig DNA in
Cadbury Dairy Milk hazelnut chocolate products. Jakim reassured consumers that
those who have been using products with the Malaysian halal logo need not worry,
as ongoing monitoring is in place. If any violations or non-compliance with
certification requirements are found, Jakim can immediately suspend or revoke the
halal certification. It was mentioned that regular inspections of the chocolate
manufacturer had been conducted, with the last inspection on February 20, 2014,
showing compliance with Malaysian halal certification standards.

2.2 Cosmetic Industry Issue

Dr. Hasmiza Othman, the founder of Vida Beauty Sdn Bhd, has announced the
temporary withdrawal of the Qu Puteh Whitening Pro 9 and Qu Puteh Whitening UV

Block products from the markets of Brunei and Malaysia, effective immediately. This
decision comes after concerns were raised about these products containing
unauthorized levels of mercury. Dr. Vida assured that a thorough investigation will be
conducted into these products and emphasized that consumer health is of utmost
importance. She urged consumers not to panic, as such issues had not arisen
before. The Brunei Health Ministry also banned three Qu Puteh products due to
allegedly containing harmful substances. Despite the suspension of these two
products, Dr. Vida stated that other products like Pamoga, Qu Puteh, and Milenia
would continue to be available, expressing confidence in their safety and asking
consumers not to lose faith in her products.

It was founded a long time ago in 1824 in England by a man named John Cadbury.
He started by selling cocoa and drinking chocolate. As time passed, Cadbury began
making different types of chocolates that people loved.

One of their most famous creations is the Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bar,
which became really popular. It's made with creamy milk chocolate that's loved by
people of all ages. Over the years, Cadbury has come up with many other tasty
chocolate products, like chocolates with different fillings and flavors.

Cadbury's chocolates are enjoyed all around the world. The company has a
special logo that shows their chocolates are "halal," which means they're made
according to Islamic guidelines. This is important to many people who follow halal
dietary rules.

People like Cadbury because they use good-quality ingredients and make their
chocolates with care. The company's history of making yummy chocolates has made
it a favorite for treating ourselves and sharing joy with friends and family.

3.2 Company Background For Cosmetic Industry

Vida Beauty Sdn Bhd is a prominent Malaysian cosmetics and beauty products
company founded by Datuk Seri Dr. Hasmiza Othman, widely known as Dr. Vida.
The company specializes in a diverse range of skincare and beauty items, notably
focusing on skin whitening and enhancement products. Their offerings encompass
skincare treatments, makeup, and related beauty merchandise, distributed through
both physical stores and online platforms. Driven by a commitment to promoting
beauty and confidence, Vida Beauty employs marketing strategies like celebrity
endorsements and social media campaigns. The company places emphasis on
quality control and regulatory adherence due to the nature of cosmetics and
skincare. While specific financial details and recent developments might not be

4.0 Possible Causes Of the Issues

4.1 F&B Issue


a) Cross-Contamination in Production: There might have been cross-
contamination during the production process, where equipment or facilities
used for non-halal ingredients came into contact with halal ingredients.
b) Ingredient Sourcing: The source of one or more ingredients used in the
chocolate products might have been contaminated with porcine DNA.
c) Supplier Issues: The suppliers of raw materials might have provided
ingredients that were not properly segregated or tested for halal compliance.
d) Processing Errors: Mistakes in the processing steps could have led to
unintended mixing of non-halal ingredients.
e) Quality Control Lapses: Breakdowns in quality control measures might have
allowed contaminated products to enter the market.

4.2 Cosmetic Issue

a) Contaminated Ingredients: The products might have been formulated using


ingredients that were contaminated with mercury or other harmful substances
during the manufacturing process.

b) Supplier Auditing: Conduct thorough audits and checks of ingredient
suppliers to ensure the quality and halal compliance of raw materials.
c) Supplier Testing: Require suppliers to provide certificates of halal
compliance and conduct regular testing of incoming ingredients.
d) Improved Processing Controls: Implement better controls and checks at
each processing step to prevent unintended mixing of ingredients.
e) Rigorous Quality Control: Strengthen quality control measures to identify
and remove contaminated products before they enter the market.

6.0 Role of GMP in producing a quality, safe and halal product.
GMP, or Good Manufacturing Practice, plays a crucial role in ensuring the production
of quality, safe, and halal products. GMP refers to a set of guidelines and practices
that are designed to ensure that products are consistently produced and controlled
according to quality standards. Here's how GMP contributes to the production of
quality, safe, and halal products:

a) Quality Assurance: GMP provides a framework for maintaining consistent


quality throughout the manufacturing process. By following GMP guidelines,
manufacturers can ensure that each step of production is carefully monitored
and controlled, leading to consistent product quality.
b) Safety: GMP includes measures to prevent contamination, cross-
contamination, and mix-ups during production. This is crucial for ensuring the
safety of products, as any form of contamination could lead to health hazards
for consumers.
c) Halal Compliance: GMP principles align well with halal requirements. For
halal products, it's essential to avoid cross-contamination with non-halal

7.0 Conclusion
