INTRODUCTION
• Vastu is a traditional Hindu system of architecture, which literally translates to "science of architecture."
• These are texts found on the Indian subcontinent that describe principles of design, layout, measurements,
ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry
• Vastu shastras incorporate traditional Hindu and in some cases Buddhist beliefs.
• The designs are intended to integrate architecture with nature, the relative functions of various parts of the
structure, and ancient beliefs utilizing geometric patterns, symmetry and directional alignments.
• Vastu Shastra are the textual part of Vastu Vidya, the latter being the broader knowledge about architecture
and design theories from ancient India.
• Vastu Vidya knowledge is a collection of ideas and concepts, with or without the support of layout diagrams
that are not rigid.
• Rather, these ideas and concepts are models for the organization of space and form within a building or
collection of buildings, based on their functions in relation to each other, their usage and to the overall
fabric of the Vastu.
 ORIGIN
• In ancient India, people believed house as a living organism
and treated constructing a house as sacred ceremony. Also,
they named the spirit dwelling in the house as Vastu Purusha.
Why? It’s because of an ancient Indian story of Vastu Purusha

• Many factors govern the life of a human being; his fate, karma
and Vastu of the place where he lives and work. Apart from
karma of a person, fate and Vastu affects life’s quality. If the
Vastu is poor but the fate of a person is good then results
obtained can range from poor to mediocre; where as if the
Vastu is good and fate is unfavorable then the ill effects are
minuscule.
• Vastu Shastra is a natural Science which is very vast,
and immense.
• Vastu shastra find its importance in all kinds of
buildings.
• The importance of Vastu shastra has augmented in
modern times.
• The complete wisdom of Vastu shastra is based on
scientific facts.
• It considers Sunrays, gravitational force, magnetic
power, geographical condition, the five elements,
and directions which is very essential to construct a
house.
• If setting of things are according to principles of
vastu, the thoughts, speech & action are supported
by nature and lead to health wealth and happiness.
• So it is needed to construct a building according to
Vastu shastra.

REQUIREMENT
 PRINCIPLE OF VASTU
• ASPECT: The manner of arrangement or peculiarity of arrangement of the doors and windows in
the external walls of the building is termed as aspect.

• PROSPECT: It is to enrich the outside view .

• PRIVACY: Privacy is the screening provided for the individuals from the others. It is different from
seclusion. It is one of the important principles in the planning of buildings of all types in general
and residential buildings in particular.

• FURNITURE REQUIREMENT: While planning a building, furniture arrangements must be shown

to justify the size of a room. Roominess: Room should have all proportional dimensions. A square
room has no advantage and a rectangular room of the same floor area gives a better outlook.
Similarly height also plays an important role.

• GROUPING: Grouping is the planning of two or more related rooms in proximity of each other. It
minimizes the circulation and at the same time improves the comfort, privacy and convenience of
the inmates of the house.
• CIRCULATION: Circulation is the access into or out of a room. Sanitation: It is the provision and
upkeep of the various components of a house to keep the inmates cheerful and free from disease.

• FLEXIBILITY: Flexibility means that a room which is planned for one function can be used for other,
if so required.

• ELEGANCE: Elegance is the grand appearance of a building attained mainly owing to the elevation
which in turn depends on the plan. Selection of site for the building greatly affects the elegance.

• ECONOMY: The building should have minimum floor area with maximum utility. It will reduce cost
and hence will be economical.

• PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The following practical points should be kept in mind in the
planning of a residential building. 1. Strength and stability coupled with convenience and comfort of
the occupants should be the first consideration in planning. 2. In the years to come, a man perhaps
has to add a wing or extend some part of the house. Provision for this should be made in the
planning in the first instance so that some part already built may not be required to be dismantled in
future. 3. As far as possible, sizes of rooms should be kept large. Larger rooms can be shortened by
providing movable partitions, but smaller rooms cannot be enlarged. 4. Use prefabricated elements
for lintels, chajjas, steps etc. This measure is useful in effecting economy.
 SIGNIFICANCE OF DIRECTIONS
• East: This direction is governed by lord Indra and he
is known to be the king of Gods. He bestows wealth
and pleasures of life.
• West: This direction is directed by Lord Varun, the
lord of rains. He bestows his blessings in the form of
natural water-rain, brings prosperity and pleasures
of life. It is the most stable of all elements. Keep it
heavy and this is the best place for master Bed
Room.
• North: This direction is governed by Kuber, the god
of wealth.
• South: This direction is of Yama, the god of death.
He is manifestation of dharma, and eradicates evil
forces and bestows good things. It is a source of
wealth, crops and pleasure.
• South East: This direction is governed by lord of fire-
Agni. He gives us good personality and all good things
of life. Fire is a source of health as it is related to fire,
cooking and food. Have your kitchen, pantry, furnace,
boiler there.
• South West: This direction is directed by Niruti, the
god who protects us from evil foes. It is a source of
character, demeanor, case of longevity and death.
• North West: This place is directed by lord Vayu and he
brings on us good health, strength and long life. It is a
source of change in course of business, friendship and
enmity. There have a guest-room bed room for
unmarried girls or a store for finished goods.
• North East: This place is a supervised by lord Eeshaan,
and is a source of wealth, health and success. He
brings us wisdom, knowledge and relieves us from all
miseries and mishaps. NE is assigned to Water. Have a
bore well, underground water tank in that position.
 ELEMENTS OF VASTU SHASTRA
• Vastu is a science of direction that combines the five elements of nature and cosmos, ultimately
balancing with man and the material.
• This mysterious science unifying the five elements called ‘Panch Mahabhootas’- earth, fire, water,
sky and space and paving a way for enlightenment, happiness and prosperity.

 EARTH
• The first and foremost element of nature which
exerts maximum energy.
• It is necessary to consult the land you are
purchasing, as plot’s soil, area everything matters
in Vastu.
• The selection of site is considered very important
in Vastu element.
• A detailed inspection of soil, plot, site, shape and
size has to be done before commencing the
construction.
• Earth (prithvi) is the most important element in
Vastu and influence human lives in every way.
 WATER
• Water (jal) is present on earth in
the form of rain, ocean, sea and
rivers.
• It is the second foremost element
considered in vastu.
• Vastu provides proper directions
for the placement of water
sources.
• Water is an element of north-east.
• As far as the flow of domestic
water is concerned, it should be
drained out of north-east only.
• The water bodies such as
swimming pool and aquarium etc.
need to be made in north-east,
this direction is auspicious and
suitable for water.
FIRE
• Fire (Agni) is considered as an
element of south-east.
• In a house kitchen fire or
electrical gadgets shall be place
in south-east.
• Light is the essence of life, and
sun is the natural light giver.
• Fire is the basis of all sources of
energy including thermal power
and atomic power.
• There should be proper
ventilation for sunlight being
necessary and natural source of
light for human beings.
 AIR
• Air (vayu) is a necessary thing for all of
us living on this earth.
• In Vastu air is another important
element which is considered before
applying it.
• Air is an element of north-east.
• Air consists of various gases on earth
like oxygen, nitrogen, helium, carbon
dioxide etc.
• A balanced percentage of different
gases, atmospheric pressure and
humidity level are important for living
beings on this earth.
• There are important directions for
windows and doors in Vastu so as to
receive a good amount of air.
SPACE
• Sky is never ending and our space is
full of constellations, galaxies, star,
moon, sun and all the nine planets.
• It is also called universe which is
known as ‘Brahamand’- the place of
god.
• Space has a very important place in
our lives and Vastu gives different
directions for better space.
• Indian houses used to have open
space in the center of the house.
• Akash is a brahmasthan which should
be an open place, any disturbance
related to space in house would lead
to detrimental results.
SELECTION OF
LAND
• Kind - Whether land is fertile and solid or not.
• Shape - square , rectangular , triangular etc.
• Direction - Facing east , west , south or north.
• Angle of corners – right angle , acute or obtuse.

KIND OF LAND
• Land should be fertile.
• Though fertile land is useful for plantation yet it is suggested
for vastu may be because plantation is equally necessary for a
happy home.
• Land should be solid.
• If the land is dug and refilled then it should overflow.
• Smell of the land should be good.
• It should not contain bones or polythene bags etc.

SHAPES OF THE LOT OR LAND
• Vastu Shastra recommends square or rectangular
shapes of lands.
• However, since perfectly shaped lands are hard
to come by, vastu recommends what is known as
the Sherdah or one where the land is wider in
front and coming out narrower at the rear.
• There is also the favorable vastu known as
Gaumukhi wherein the front part is narrower
compared to the rear part where the lot is wider.
PLOT OR LAND FACINGS
1. A lot facing Northeast is a good site for homes, factories, and offices.
2. A lot facing Northwest is ideal for trading, business, and industrial sites.
3. A lot facing Southeast is good for chemical, petro-chemical, and electricity-related industries.
4. A lot facing Southwest can bring good business for night time activities.
5. Plots facing a road in more than one direction can also be significant in vastu principles.
• Land facing the West road brings fame and popularity.
• Land facing a South road is ideal for business ventures.
6. Plots facing two- side roads:: Lots facing Fast and ust roads treel fospery or remarty.
• Lots facing East and South roads foretell prosperity for female residents.
• Lots facing South and West roads as well as those facing North and South roads will provide moderate
fortune.
• Lots facing West and North roads are considered as prosperous lands.
7. Lots facing roads on three sides, one side of which leads to a road end or facing a T-junction are
considered as not ideal or weak plots.
8. The best plot of all is the lot facing roads on all sides.The Quality of Soilcan those. Land sil qua many

building sites which is also true for soil with crumbly rock composition. Soil considered as perfect for
construction.
VASTU PURUSHA MANDALA
• It is considered as a model of the universe and it
provides the basis for architectural design.
• It is a metaphorical expression of the plan of the
universe and depicts the link between people,
building and people.
• As this concept extends to include a village, town,
a country or indeed whole earth in all its
manifestations.
• In this VAASTU means environment, site or a
building.
• When the building is in a perfect order according
to Vastu Shastra it is viewed as a PURUSHA the
man of the universe, representing pure energy,
soul. It is a kind of creative intelligence in the
universe.
• MANDALA means diagram.
• It relates to orientation because the earth is
essentially demarcated by sunrise and sunset.
• It describes the type of mandalas that can be used
as building and town planning.
 DRAWING ROOM
• Hang some musical nodes at the entry
• Keep clock on north or east side walls
• You should sit facing east or north and
let guests sit facing south or west
• Keep water bodies or lamp shades in the north east
