Answer all the questions.
QUESTION 1 (15 marks)
(a) A baseband digital communication channel that has a bandwidth of 5 kHz is corrupted by
a zero-mean Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). The channel is used to transmit a
signal of an average power of 100 W resulting in a Signal to Noise Ratio of 20 dB at the
receiver input. Calculate the
(i) Noise power at the receiver input. (2 marks)
(ii) One-sided power-spectral density (psd) of the AWGN. (2 mark)
(iii) Channel capacity. (3 marks)

(b) A 100 kbps baseband digital communication system uses rectangular pulses of magnitudes
-5V and +5V to transmit bits 0 and 1 respectively through a channel that is corrupted by
an AWGN. Given that the average signal to noise ratio of the received data is 16.07 dB.
Determine the:
(i) Standard deviation of the AWGN (3 marks)
(ii) Probability of an error in a received data bit (3 marks)
(iii) Expected number of bit errors per unit time. (2 marks)

QUESTION 2 (15 marks)

(a) An FSK-based bandpass digital communication system uses frequencies of 3 MHz and 9
MHz to transmit bits 1 and 0 respectively. Given that the spectral efficiency of the system
is 12 %, calculate the:
(i) Transmission data rate. ( 3 marks)
(ii) Bandwidth of the FSK signal. (2 marks)

(b) A matched filter is employed in the reception of a single pulse signal defined as follows;
10 sin(1000𝜋𝑡) 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 0.001𝑠
𝑥(𝑡) = {
0 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒

The signal is corrupted by an AWGN whose two-sided psd is 𝐺(f) = 5 µ𝑊/𝐻𝑧. Assuming
that the output signal is sampled at 𝑇 = 1 𝑚𝑠, determine the:

(i) Sampled output signal voltage ( 3 marks)

(ii) SNR at the output of the filter in decibels ( 4 marks)
(iii) Transfer function of the matched filter. ( 3 marks)
