1 Hardware Description
The VestasOnline® Business server hardware is based on a standard 19” rack
cabinet.
The 19” rack cabinet consists of these units:
• Server with monitor and keyboard
• Router – WAN communication unit for remote access
• LAN switch(s) communication unit for internal communication in rack
• Retractable drawer(s) with fibre switches for communication to wind turbine
fibre loop network
• RS 232 serial communication unit (VestasOnline® Business 60 only)
• UPS redundancy control unit (VestasOnline® Business 60 only)
• UPS unit(s) with surge protection
• Air cooling unit

The VestasOnline® Business server system is available in two different hardware

configurations:
• VestasOnline® Business 40 – VOB 40
• VestasOnline® Business 60 – VOB 60

The main difference between the two configurations is that the VestasOnline®
Business 60 includes a tape backup system. In addition, it also has redundant
LAN switches and UPS system and consequently will be able to operate on
batteries for a longer time.

1.1 Server
The server hardware is based on a Hewlett-Packard industry server that is
designed for professional applications with focus on high availability and
reliability. The server is equipped with a flat-panel monitor and keyboard for
system administration purposes.
See section: “2 - Software Description” for further information about server
software.

1.2 Remote access communication

The remote access communication in the rack is based on a Cisco WAN router
with built-in ADSL/VPN communication. The router provides remote access
communication and secure communication lines between VestasOnline®
Business clients and the VestasOnline® Business server. Two communication
slots can be fitted with modules for additional ADSL/VPN or ADSL/Satellite
communication and must be bought locally.

1.3 Internal communication

The internal communication in the rack is based on the Cisco Catalyst LAN
switch with ports available for network connections.
In the VestasOnline® Business 60 system the internal communication consists of
2 Cisco Catalyst LAN switches, which means that the network communication is
redundant and each of the network switches is connected via network cables to
the server and all loop switches.

1.4 Fibre loop(s) communication

The drawer(s) with Hirschmann fibre switches are used for connecting fibre
loop(s) with wind turbines and the server. Typically one fibre loop with fibre
switches is used per electrical feeder in the wind power plant, but fibre loops for
other equipment e.g. inside the substation can also be mounted here. The fibre
switches are rail-mounted managed single mode fibre switches.

1.5 RS232 communication unit (VestasOnline® Business

60 only)
The RS232 communication is based on the Moxa NPort unit that has 16 ports
available for serial connections.
In the VestasOnline® Business 60 system the Moxa NPort unit is used for
connecting the GPS, the GSM modem with the server and for serial
communication with older wind turbines.

1.6 UPS system

The UPS system is based on a Eaton UPS that is designed to protect the server
and connected hardware units in the rack against grid drops, high power
transients and currents.
On the VestasOnline® Business 60 system, the UPS system consists of two
redundant UPS units and a UPS redundancy control unit. If one of the UPS
systems fails, the redundancy control unit will switch power over from the failing
UPS to the other UPS instantaneously to ensure uninterrupted power supply to
the connected hardware units.
An additional environmental sensor unit is attached to the UPS and used for
monitoring temperature and humidity inside the VestasOnline® Business server
rack.

1.6.2 UPS software

The Eaton UPS Software is used for monitoring status signals from the UPS units
and is monitored by the VestasOnline® Business server through an Ethernet
interface. In case a grid drop exceeds the UPS backup time, the VestasOnline®
Business server will shut down itself automatically. When the grid has returned
and is stabilized, the UPS automatically restarts the VestasOnline® Business
server.

1.7 Backup system (VestasOnline® Business 60 only)

The backup system for the server is based on a HP tape drive that is capable of
storing compressed data on a single tape. The tape backup solution also
includes Veritas Backup Exec backup software for scheduled backup.

mobile telephones.

1.9 GPS receiver (optional - VestasOnline® Business 60

only)
The GPS receiver unit is used for receiving time information used for time
synchronization of server and wind turbines.

1.10 Air cooling unit

The server rack is supplied with a cooling unit mounted on the rear side of the
rack panel providing a closed circuit of air inside the rack. The air cooling unit is
maintenance-free without any filter, but it requires a floor drain for condensate
water. An effective cooling capacity of 820W secures a rack temperature of 20-
25°C even if the server room temperature rises to 3 5°C.

NOTE The air cooling unit requires a floor drain for condensate water with a diameter of
20 mm.
