HOMEWORK 2:
On Lenses: Off-Screen Space Challenge
Assignment Brief: The aim of this work is to experiment in creating meaning by using
diverse lenses and focal lengths and develop an understanding of the limits and
borders of your frame.

Assignment Deadline: (Week 7) until 10:00 via Moodle.

TASK

• For this assignment you are expected to think about the borders of your
frame (off-screen and on-screen space). You should create an element of
surprise through thinking what and when to include and exclude a detail in
your shot. You have to build a mini story with a couple of frames. You should
take your photographs from the same spot changing only the focal length.
Focal length tells you the length and magnifying power of the lens. Just
change the lens (or use a zoom lens and change the focal length) as much as
you want and reveal the surprise that was hidden at the off-screen space.

• Narrow to wide: You can start with a tele lens (Long focal length) and
surprise the viewer over and over again by adding new information to the
frame with each lens change.
• Wide to narrow: Or you can start with a wide lens (with a short focal length)
and with each lens change you can surprise the viewer by showing them a
detail that they couldn't see before.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• You should at least submit 2 photos.

• Your photo series should include an element of shock or surprise.
• Submit your photographs in a serial order, arranged according your
storyline.
• Submission date: Week 7
• This assignment is worth 15% of the overall assessment for this
course.
