- 61 3 050

Necessary preliminary tasks:

- Read out fault memory of DME control unit
- Switch off ignition
- Remove acoustic cover
- Remove right ignition coil cover

Important:

Fuel in fuel lines is under pressure (approx. 3 - 5 bar).

Catch and dispose of escaping fuel.

Remove dust cap on measuring valve of fuel rail.

Unscrew non-return valve (1) on special tool kit 13 5 220.
Mount special tool kit 13 5 220 on fuel rail and tighten knurled nut until hand-tight.
Start engine.
Screw in non-return valve (1) until a pressure reading is indicated on the DIS Tester.

Important:

Do not under any circumstances screw in the check valve up to the mechanical stop. This could damage the valve in the pressure regulator housing.

Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Description and Operation
Air Mass Meter

This mass air flow sensor is designed as a hot-film air mass meter.

A heated surface of the hot-film air mass sensor in the flow of intake air is controlled to a constant temperature with respect to the intake air. The intake
air flowing past this surface cools this heated surface and thus changes its resistance. The heating current which is necessary in order to maintain the
constant temperature is the measurement variable for the air mass drawn in. The DME control unit uses it to calculate the load signal and thus the basic
variable for the injection timing.

Important advantages:
- Changes in air pressure (air density) are recorded
- Temperature influences are compensated
- No moving parts
- Large measuring range
- Low pressure drop in the intake pipe due to low air resistance. This improves the efficiency of the engine.

In contrast to the hot-wire mass air sensor, clear-burning of the sensor is no longer necessary after the engine has been turned off. Any dirt deposits on
the surface do not influence the sensor signals directly since the protective film cleans itself due to the constant overtemperature.

Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
Replacing Fuel Filter (N62)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

- Switch off ignition

Recycling

The fuel in the fuel lines is under pressure (approx. 3 to 5 bar):

Fuel emerges when the fuel lines are disconnected from the fuel filter.
Catch and dispose of escaping fuel.
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Removing fuel tank underbody protection on left:

Release screws (1).

Loosen screws (2).

Release screws (1) on rear left wheel arch trim.

2
BMW X5 (E53) V8-4.4L (N62) 370

Carefully press wheel arch trim to one side.

Release screw (1).

Release screws (1).

3
BMW X5 (E53) V8-4.4L (N62) 371

Release screws (1) and (2).

Unscrew nuts (3).

Lower fuel tank underbody protection (1) only until access to pressure regulator is unhindered.

NOTE:

Mark fuel lines on fuel filter.

This prevents the fuel lines from being installed incorrectly on the fuel filter.
The fuel pressure regulator is integrated in the fuel filter and cannot be replaced.

Ensure adequate ventilation in the place of work!
Ensure absolute cleanliness when working on the open fuel tank.
Contaminants in the fuel tank can impair driving operation or may even result in vehicle breakdown!

Necessary Preliminary Tasks:

Draw off fuel from fuel tank. See: Fuel Tank/Service and Repair
Remove rear sear bench.

Detach rubber plug above sensor unit on right.

Fold back rubber mat.

Important!
Do not damage gasket.

Fuel Tank: Service and Repair
Draining And Filling Fuel Tank

CAUTION:

Observe relative country safety legislation and regulations.

Ensure adequate ventilation in the place of work.
Connect exhaust extraction unit to exhaust tailpipe.
The electric fuel pump must not operate without fuel. After completing repairs and before starting engine for first time, fill fuel tank through fuel filler
pipe with min. 5 ltr. fuel.
Do not damage non-return flap when pulling out extraction hose.

M47, M57

Before starting the engine for the first time, if the tank has been run dry or drawn off, fill with diesel fuel and turn on ignition for approx. 1 minute.
The fuel circuit is thus filled and vented, which results in the engine firing more quickly.

Drawing off fuel:

Start engine and allow to run. Electric fuel supply pump runs.

In this way, the fuel is repumped through the suction jet pump and the tank expansion line from the left to the right side of the fuel tank.

NOTE: Fuel can be drawn off from the left and right tank halves through the fuel filler pipe down to a small residual amount. This residual amount is
drawn off after removal of the sensors for the fuel gauge (right/left).

Slide extraction hose of extractor unit into filler pipe, turning hose slightly if necessary.

Insertion length:
130 cm All except E53 and E65 / E66
150 cm E53 and E65 / E66

Draw off fuel with extractor unit as far as possible.

Follow the fuel drawing-off procedure at the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster.

Drawing off residual fuel quantity:

CAUTION:

Ensure car interior is adequately ventilated.

Catch dripping fuel in a suitable container.

Remove sensor for fuel gauge (right).

Remove sensor for fuel gauge (left).
Draw off residual fuel quantity through installation openings.
