PIECEWISE FUNCTION

PRESENTED BY: GROUP 3

PIECEWISE
FUNCTION
A piecewise function is a function that is defined
by different formulas of each given interval. The
function is defined by pieces of functions for each
part of domain.
PROBLEM SOLVING
You have a summer job that pays time and a half for overtime. That is, if
you work more than 40 hours per week, your hourly wage for extra hours is
1.5 times your normal hourly wage of ₱30.00

write a piecewise function

that gives your weekly pay
'P' in terms of the number of
hours 'h' you work

30(40) + 1.5(30)(h-40), if h>40

write a piecewise function How much will you get paid

'P' in terms of the number of

P(45) = 30(40) + 1.5(30)(h-40)
= 1,200 + 45 (45-40)
=1,200 + 45(5)
30h, if 0 < h ≤ 40
P(h)= =1,200 + 225
30(40) + 1.5(30)(h-40), if h>40
=1,425
HOW TO GRAPH A
PIECEWISE FUNCTION?
Step
Firstly, identify each of the domains
corresponding to the different
subfunctions of the piecewise
function.
PROBLEM SOLVING

The cost of hiring a catering services to serve food for a party is ₱

150 per head for 20 persons or less, ₱ 130 per head for 21 to 50
persons, and ₱100 per head for more than 100 persons. Represent
the total cost as a piecewise function of the number of attendees of
the party

Step Then, look at the inputs and outputs of
each of the functions and their
corresponding intervals.

Step Then, graph each piece of the piecewise function

defined on each interval. Once all pieces have been
graphed, the final piecewise graph is done.
₱ 150 per head, if 0 < h ≤ 20

c(h) = ₱130 per head, if 21 ≤ h ≤ 50

₱100 per head, if h > 50
ASSESSMENT
EXAMPLE

4x + 5 if x < - 2
f(x) =
3x - 8 if x ≥ 2

find f(-2) and f(5)
