EEET2600- Electronics
Lab 03 – Active Filters
I. Active Low Pass Filter
Problem Solving
This section you should finish prior coming to the class
1. An active low pass filter is given as follows with R1= 1kOhms, R2= 1kOhms, R3= 10KOhms, C
=0.01uf and Vin=1Vpp

𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
2. Write the formulas for calculate the magnitude and phase of the voltage gain 𝐴𝑓 = 𝑉𝑖𝑛
and
the phase shift between the output voltage and input voltage.
3. Calculate the maximum gain of the filter.
4. Calculate the cut off frequency of the filter.
Simulation
1. Build the circuit above in the MultiSim
2. Setup and run the simulation to plot the Bode plots (both magnitude and phase)
3. Measure the cut off frequency and max gain of the filter.

Experiment - Filter Frequency Response using NI ELVIS

1. Collect components from the Lecturer.
2. Setup your ELVIS board.
3. Build the low pass filter
4. Connect the input and output signals according to the following diagram

5. Plot the Bode Plot using ELVISMx tools. Use the scan parameters as follows
• Start: 2 (Hz)
• Stop: 20000 (Hz)
• Steps: 20(per decade)
6. Compare the plot with the one from the simulated result earlier.
7. Measure the cut off frequency and max gain of the filter and compare with the simulated
results earlier.

II. Frequency Response of Op-amps

In this section you will analyse the frequency response of an op-amp filter.

Simulation
1. Build the following circuit in the MultiSim with 𝑅𝑖= 1kOhms, 𝑅𝑓 = 10𝐾𝑂ℎ𝑚𝑠

2. Setup and run the simulation to plot the Bode plots (both magnitude and phase)
3. Measure the cut off frequency and max gain of the amplifier.
4. Analyse the Bode plot and compare the actual gain vs the theoretical gain of (Rf/R1). Does the
gain experience a drop when the frequency changes?

Experiment - Frequency Response using NI ELVIS

1. Collect components.
2. Setup your ELVIS board and then build the amplifier
3. Connect the input and output signals according to the following diagram where R1 = 1KOhms,
Rf = 10KOhms

4. Plot the Bode Plot using ELVISMx tools. Use the scan parameters as follows
• Start: 2 (Hz)
• Stop: 100000 (Hz)
• Steps: Starts with 5 and then later change to 20(per decade)
• Peak amplitude is 1
5. Compare the plot with the one from the simulated result earlier.
6. Measure the cut off frequency and max gain of the amplifier and compare with the simulated
results earlier.

III. Extra - Active High Pass Filter

1. Build a PASSIVE HIGH PASS FILTEr with C1 = 0.1 uf and R3 = 10K

2. Run the Bode plot for this

• Start: 2 (Hz)
• Stop: 100000 (Hz)
• Steps: Starts with 5 and then later change to 20(per decade)
• Peak amplitude is 2
3. Once you done connect the filter and the amplifier earlier in the Part 2

Use the above steps to calculate, simulate and experiment a high pass filter with 𝑅𝑖= 1kOhms,
𝑅𝑓=10𝐾𝑂ℎ𝑚𝑠

4. Run the Bode plot for this

• Start: 2 (Hz)
• Stop: 100000 (Hz)
• Steps: Starts with 5 and then later change to 20(per decade)
• Peak amplitude is 0.1 or 1 if you wish
5. Once you done connect the filter and the amplifier earlier in the Part 2

Especially pay attention to see the response of the filter – does it behave like a high pass or a band pass?
What is the cut off at the high frequency band
