MODES FOR DEVELOPING PARAGRAPHS


1. Description: takes the whole divides it
into parts, and then treats each separately.
2. Narrative: the recreation of a sequence of

process of grouping related terms or ideas
METHODS FOR DEVELOPING PARAGRAPHS
1. Cause and Effect
• an analysis or descriptive mode, this process breaks the topic into its parts
2. Problem and Solution
• explaining the problem, and then presents a solution or several solutions
3. Definition
• answers the question “What is it?” 8
4. Analysis or Process Analysis
• separates an object or concept into its parts, and then explains how they are
related to the whole
5. Example or Illustration
• helps support points that the writer is making. 9
6. Comparison or Contrast
• Comparison shows similarities; contrast shows
differences.
7. Facts, Figures, Statistics, and Quotations
• help develop many topics, but only if they are properly

PATTERNS OF PARAGRAPH ORGANIZATION
1. Time or Chronological Order
• Narrates events from introduction to conclusion [time is the matter of
consideration]. uses time order words 11
2. Space or Spatial Order
• Places things or people in relation to each other. 12
3. Breakdown Order
• Analyzes a topic, breaking it down into its logical segments.
4. Particular to General
• A succession of particular statements to a conclusion to which the
particulars lead. common in expository paragraphs –topic sentence near at or the end 13
5. Relationship Order
• Shows how one thing is related to another. highlights connections 14
