8 INTRODUCTION

Introduction
Installation and moving of the :AVALON B8-24 must be performed by an Agfa
Graphics appointed service company or service technician. Agfa Graphics bears
absolutely no responsibility for any damage, breakdowns, or malfunctioning
resulting from installation or moving by anyone other than an Agfa Graphics
appointed service company or service technician, and Agfa Graphics extends no
guarantees regarding safety in such a case. If you need to have the
:AVALON B8-24 moved or installed, consult one of the Agfa Graphics offices or
agency.

Installation Location
Please observe the following installation conditions for safe use of the
:AVALON B8-24.

 Overvoltage Category: Category II (Refer IEC 60664-1)

 Pollution Degree: 2 (Refer IEC 60664-1)

 Locations where liquids do not splash

Do not install the :AVALON B8-24 in any of the following locations, as safety
problems, failures, and malfunctioning may result.

 Locations directly exposed to sunlight

 Locations where electrical interference (voltage fluctuations or noise) may

occur

 Locations close to machines that emit strong magnetic fields

 Locations subject to sudden changes of temperature

 Locations close to sources of heat

 Locations with high temperature or high humidity

 Locations subject to vibration

 Unstable locations where the floor is not level

 Locations with dust and particles (e.g., printing sites)

:AVALON B8-24 Operator’s Guide

1 INSTALLING AND MOVING THE :AVALON B8-24 9

 Location subject to condensation

 Locations where the :AVALON B8-24 might be exposed to chemical

solutions, smoke, volatile gases or corrosive gases

 Locations where vermin such as rodents, spiders, and cockroaches can access

High temperature, high humidity Vibrations, unstable

 If rodents enter the installation location, the cables may be bitten and discon-
nected. We recommend taking preventive measures for rodents.

Space Required for Installation

To allow escape in the event of danger and enable access for maintenance, leave
at least 800 mm open around the periphery of the :AVALON B8-24. Keep the
floor free of obstacles and keep the path to the facility side power switch clear.
Retain sufficient space on the conveyor side as well.

:AVALON B8-24 Operator’s Guide

10 LOAD TOLERANCE OF BUILDING

(Units: mm)

1 Adjustable leg

Load Tolerance of Building

The following floor load bearing capacity is required for the installation site.
Load bearing capacity: 3447.5 N/m2 (352 kgf/m2)
Concentrated load: 2413.25 N (246 kgf)

NOTE: The above load bearing capacity can be obtained by dividing the
equipment weight by the projected area of the individual equipment, and the
concentrated load can be obtained by calculation, assuming that the equipment
weight is supported at four points.

:AVALON B8-24 Operator’s Guide

1 INSTALLING AND MOVING THE :AVALON B8-24 11

Ground Connections
In order to prevent electrical shock accidents from the AC power supply, perform
grounding connections for the machine only after making sure that the
:AVALON B8-24 power switch and the facility side power switch are both off.

Since the leakage current of the :AVALON B8-24 is more than 3.5 mA, be sure to
conduct grounding before connecting the power line of the :AVALON B8-24
3-line cable.

Have a qualified electrician select the above items and perform the connections.

Power Supply and Power Cables

 Electrical work should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

 Arrange for the power supply to be available as indicated in “Technical Infor-

mation” on page 65.

 :AVALON B8-24 power is supplied independently from the facility side

power switch, other devices should therefore not be connected to that power
switch.

 Use a stabilizer (constant-voltage device) if a stable power supply that falls

within the voltage range listed in “Technical Information” on page 65,
cannot be obtained.

 A power cable is not provided with products sold outside of Japan. For the
:AVALON B8-24, please locally obtain a power supply cable that satisfies the
following requirements.

Main unit 5.5 mm2 x 3-wire cable with an outer diameter of 9 mm to

17 mm, rated for 300 V AC or higher.
Blower unit (option) 2.0 mm2 x 3-wire cable with an outer diameter of 9 mm to
14 mm, rated for 300 V AC or higher.

If the cable described above does not comply with the standards of the
country of installation, please refer to the power supply nameplate attached
to the :AVALON B8-24 and provide a cable locally that does comply.

CAUTION: A readily accessible disconnection device (facility side power switch)

must be installed in the fixed facility wiring before installing the
:AVALON B8-24.

Outline of Operation
The general procedure for operating the :AVALON B8-24 is explained in this
section.

WARNING: Keep your hands and face away from the :AVALON B8-24 during plate
transportation. If plates are handled with bare hands, the edges of the plate may
cause injury.

CAUTION: The edges of the plate are sharp and it is dangerous to touch this area
with your bare hands. Be sure to wear anti-slip protective gloves when handling
the plate.
If the :AVALON B8-24 stops immediately due to an incident such as a power
failure, gaps may appear between the transport guide and guard plate and your
hands or fingers may be caught at the time of recovery. Do not bring your hands
or face close to this section.

1 Check that all of the covers are closed and then turn on the :AVALON B8-24

the transport guide.

CAUTION: Be sure to verify that there are no pieces of packaging or interleaf

paper remaining on either side of the plate when setting a plate on the
transport guide. There is a danger of the thermal laser starting a fire inside
the :AVALON B8-24.

3 Using the plate positioning scale marks on the right and left sides of the plate,
align the plate to the appropriate for its size.

1 Plate positioning scale mark

NOTE: Pasting the attached positioning label directly above the scale on the
transport guide will provide a guide for the plate insertion point. The printing
plate width should be written onto the positioning label and pasted directly
above the scale as shown in the figure below. Pasting it to a position that is
not directly above the scale may cause the positioning label to peel off,
resulting in transport errors and malfunctions.
