Research Location:

This study will be conducted at Holy Name University, Janssen Heights, J.A.
Clarin Street Dampas District 6300 Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines.

Rationale:

The school plays a crucial role in shaping individuals during their formative
years. It provides a structured environment specifically designed for education, which
is essential for navigating the complexities of modern society. Education is viewed as
a transformative force, empowering individuals to reach their full potential. However,
the rising cost of education can make it difficult for students to finance their studies,
leading to dropout rates and hindering the nation's progress.

Despite these challenges, many students choose to balance work and

education, driven by a desire for personal growth and financial independence. Juggling
these responsibilities requires effective time management, discipline, and
perseverance, fostering essential life skills such as resilience, adaptability, and a
strong work ethic. Employed students bring real-world perspectives to the classroom,
enriching the learning environment for their peers. They also contribute to the
workforce and broader economy, making meaningful contributions to their
communities.
However, balancing work and education can be challenging, leading to role
conflict. Employed students must manage conflicting expectations and demands, such
as meeting academic deadlines while fulfilling work obligations. To achieve success
in both domains, students can implement various strategies, including prioritizing
tasks, creating schedules, setting realistic goals, effective communication, flexibility,
self-care, and setting boundaries. These strategies help students optimize their
productivity, reduce stress levels, and achieve a harmonious balance between their
academic and work responsibilities.

Objectives:

To determine the academic and work role conflict

and balance and its significant relationship among employed students of Holy Name
University.

Study Design:

The study will use a descriptive-correlational type of research design, which

means observing, measuring without manipulating, and correlating between the
variables in the study.

Inclusion Criteria:

The inclusion criteria for participants will be: Currently enrolled as a student in
tertiary level at Holy Name University, Employed part-time on different
establishments/companies may it be online or face to face setup while pursuing their
studies, have been employed at least 6 months or more, and has the willingness to
participate voluntarily in the study.

Exclusion Criteria:

This study will not include students who are not employed in establishments or
companies while juggling work and their studies, and students who may be working
but are not employed for at least 6 months, and those that are not enrolled at Holy
Name University.

Number of participants:

The study would have a minimum of 30 employed student participants.

Study Duration:

This study is anticipated to conclude in January of the academic year 2023-

2024. It will span approximately 14 months, commencing from the previous semester.

INFORMATION SHEET

PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH

The college students from Holy Name University taking up Bachelor of Science
in Psychology are conducting this undergraduate thesis as a requirement for our
Research in Psychology II Course, we are conducting a study entitled “Academic-
Work Role Conflict and Balance among Employed Students in Holy Name
University” by which would assess the researchers to help employed students’
achievement and well-being.

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS

The participants for this study are the college students that are employed while
studying at Holy Name University, who will be selected purposively. There will be a
minimum of 30 participants who are expected to take part in this study. Under the
following criteria, the research participants must be;

● A college student, either male or female,

● Must be a bonafide student of Holy Name University A.Y 2023-2024.
● Must be employed for a minimum of 6 months work of experience while
simultaneously pursuing their studies at Holy Name University

Furthermore, participants who refuse and willingly withdraw from the study, as well as
those who will provide inconsistent data shall be pulled out as part of the research
participants.
INFORMATION ABOUT STUDY PARTICIPATION

Location
This study will be conducted among the employed college students at Holy Name
University.

Anticipated Reaction.
Respondents may be asked to share their personal information about their academic
and work experiences. Consequently, participation in the research could evoke a wide-
array of emotions and/or memories in some respondents primarily because the
research is focused on a topic that may be appraised as burdening by some employed
students. Alongside potential risks, there are a number of potential benefits to being a
respondent in this research. First, they will have the opportunity to contribute to a study
that could have a significant impact on the lives of employed students. Second,
participation in the research could help respondents better understand their own
experiences anchored in the role conflict and balance. This could lead to the
development of more effective coping strategies that would cater to the complex needs
of each employed student.

Data Collection Procedures

The researchers created a research-made questionnaire to gather data best fit for the
study. The two research-made questionnaires were validated by professionals and
pilot-tested. The researchers will use purposive snowball sampling to identify study
respondents. After identifying the latter, they will be asked to participate in the study
by directly communicating the proper introduction, intention, and nature of the study
to their respective email addresses or messenger accounts. The data will be collected
via Google Forms, with the researchers sending survey questionnaires to
respondents’ email addresses or messenger accounts. Apart from that, they will be
provided with informed consent informing that their participation is voluntary, and that
their responses are highly confidential; and will not be shared with unauthorised
parties.

Duration of Gathering Data

The duration of the whole data gathering process will take at least one month to
complete from the actual gathering from the respondents, data tabulation, and making
the findings of the study.

A consent form will be included on the questionnaire that will be sent to the qualified
respondents preceding the series of questions necessary for data gathering.
Respondents can choose to ignore answering the questions or to not agree on the
terms of agreement stated in the informed consent, and will actively participate in the
study for around 5 to 10 minutes only.

Risks and Benefits

The respondents may receive feedback on their research participation. This could be
helpful in identifying areas, where participants can improve their academic and work
performance. The risks and benefits of participating in this research should be carefully
considered by each potential respondents. They should weigh the potential risks
against the potential benefits before making a decision. This information could be
sensitive in nature, and participants may feel uncomfortable sharing it. And when
respondents are sensitive to the questions being asked in a research study, it is
important for the researcher to take steps to minimise any discomfort or distress. This
discomfort can be minimised by building rapport, implementing a sensitive and
supportive approach, and by assuring of the data’s confidentiality.

When respondents declined to participate, they will be informed that their decision
would not affect their relationship with the researcher or the institution. After all, before
deciding whether to participate in the study, it is their responsibility to read the consent
form and accompanying documentation and consider the benefits and risks carefully.
