3. STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF ESSENTIAL OIL OF WEDELIA CHINENSIS
(OSBECK) AGAINST MICROBES AND INFLAMMATION
-A. Manjamalai, G. J. Jiflin, V. B. Grace-
Published 2012 Medicine, Environmental Science
The aim of the study is to evaluate the Anti-Microbial and Anti-Inflammatory
activity of the essential oil of Wedelia chinensis and the results obtained were
compared with the respective standard antibiotic discs of both bacteria and fungi.
Abstract The aim of the study is to evaluate the Anti-Microbial and Anti-
Inflammatory activity of the essential oil of Wedelia chinensis. Based on the
preliminary study, on the determination of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration and
Minimal Fungicidal Concentration carried out, 50µg/ml was taken as the optimum
dose for the determination of anti-microbial activities of the essential oil. The study
was carried out against selected bacterial and fungal strains. The results obtained
for the study was compared with the respective standard antibiotic discs of both
bacteria and fungi. Inflammation has been induced in the Swiss albino rat models
of both sexes using different inflammatory agents in the paw and ear of essential
oil pretreated rats. Then the inflammatory site is measured in different time
intervals. Before the commencement of the study, acute toxicity study was carried
out for identifying the minimal dosage of drug which is not toxic to the animal
when administered intraperitoneally. The results obtained for the anti-inflammatory
activity was compared with the positive control Diclofenac sodium and negative
control (50% of Ethanol). GCMS analysis was carried out in the essential oil for the
identification of the major compounds present in Wedelia chinensis. The
identification was based on comparison of their mass spectra and retention
indices. The major compounds identified were Carvocrol and t- Caryophyllene.
4. Evaluation of Antimicrobial and Wound Healing Potentials of Ethanol Extract of
Wedelia biflora
-Biswas, Yoganandam Gp, A.Dey, Deb-
Published in Indian Journal of… 1 March 2013 Environmental Science, Medicine
TLDR The agar well-diffusion evaluation and minimum inhibitory concentration
established antimicrobial efficacy of ethanol extracts of W. biflora and it could be a
potent wound healing candidate for use in future. Abstract To rationalize
scientifically the traditional claim on use of Wedelia biflora (Linn.) D. C. for the
treatment of wounds and infections, the present study was designed to evaluate
the antimicrobial and wound healing activity of ethanol extract of leaves of W.
biflora. In in vitro assays the test extract was subjected to antimicrobial activity by
agar well-diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration method in
different microbial strains. Wound healing activity of the test extract was studied
by excision wound model and incision wound model in Wistar albino rats. In
excision wound model, 97.90% wound healing was recorded in 10% w/w extract
treated group on 16th days of postsurgery, whereas only 58.50% was observed in
control group. In incision model, higher breaking strength, high hydroxyl proline
content and histopathological study in extract treated groups revealed higher
collagen redeposition than the control group. The agar well-diffusion evaluation
and minimum inhibitory concentration established antimicrobial efficacy of
ethanol extracts of W. biflora. These observations established the traditional claim
and therapeutic activity of W. biflora and it could be a potent wound healing
candidate for use in future.
5. Uncovering the Industrial Potentials of Lemongrass Essential Oil as a Food
Preservative: A Review
-Fatima Faheem, Z. Liu, +7 authors Rana Muhammad Aadil-
Published in Antioxidants 1 April 2022 Medicine
The food industry is growing vastly, with an increasing number of food products
and the demand of consumers to have safe and pathogen-free food with an
extended shelf life for consumption. It is critical to have food safe from pathogenic
bacteria, fungi, and unpleasant odors or tastes so that the food may not cause any
health risks to consumers. Currently, the direction of food industry has been
shifting from synthetically produced preservatives to natural preservatives to
lower the unnecessary chemical burden on health. Many new technologies are
working on natural prevention tools against food degradation. Lemongrass is one
such natural preservative that possesses significant antimicrobial and antioxidant
activity. The essential oil of lemongrass contains a series of terpenes that are
responsible for these activities. These properties make lemongrass acceptable in
the food industry and may fulfill consumer demands. This article provides detailed
information about the role of lemongrass and its essential oil in food preservation.
The outcomes of the research on lemongrass offer room for its new technological
applications in food preservation.

6. Evaluation of cholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant potential of Wedelia

chinensis: possible implications in alleviating Alzheimer’s disease

Published 10 February 2021 Biology
The potential ability of W. chinensis to inhibit the cholinesterase activity and
peroxidation of lipids suggest that the plant might be useful for the management of
AD. Background Wedelia chinensis has been reported as a folk medicine for the
treatment of different diseases including neurodegenerative disease. Although the
plant has been studied well for diverse biological activities, the effect of this plant
in neurological disorder is largely unknown. The present study was undertaken to
evaluate the cholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant potential of W. chinensis.
Methods The extract and fractions of the plant were evaluated for
acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity by modified
Ellman method. The antioxidant activity was assessed in several in vitro
models/assays such as reducing power, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic
and flavonoid content, scavenging of 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free
radical and hydroxyl radical, and inhibition of brain lipid peroxidation.
Chromatographic and spectroscopic methods were used to isolate and identify the
active compound from the extract. Results Among the extract and functions,
aqueous fraction (AQF) and ethylacetate fraction (EAF) exhibited high inhibition
against acetylcholinesterase (IC50: 40.02 ± 0.164 µg/ml and 57.76 ± 0.370 µg/ml)
and butyrylcholinesterase (IC50: 31.79 ± 0.182 µg/ml and 48.41 ± 0.053 µg/ml).
Similarly, the EAF and AQF had high content of phenolics and flavonoids and
possess strong antioxidant activity in several antioxidant assays including DPPH
and hydroxyl radical scavenging, reducing power and total antioxidant activity.
They effectively inhibited the peroxidation of brain lipid in vitro with IC50 values of
45.20 ± 0.995 µg/ml and 25.53 ± 0.042 µg/ml, respectively. A significant correlation
was observed between total flavonoids and antioxidant and cholinesterase
inhibitory activity. Activity guided chromatographic separation led to the isolation
of a major active compound from the EAF and its structure was elucidated as
apigenin by spectral analysis. Conclusions The potential ability of W. chinensis to
inhibit the cholinesterase activity and peroxidation of lipids suggest that the plant
might be useful for the management of AD.
