This is one of the additional language offers for students to use a foreign language as a
means of practical communication in their daily life.

What is the rationale for this course?


1. Chinese is the most spoken language globally. Currently, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by
about one-fifth of the global population;
2. China is the second largest economy in the world, and thus its language is important
economically;
3. In addition to the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan, Mandarin Chinese is also
spoken by influential Chinese communities of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore,
Brunei, the Philippines, and Mongolia.

What is the synopsis this course?


The course is intended for those who work in an office and without any prior knowledge of
Chinese Language. It aims to provide them with a basic foundation in conversational Chinese
Mandarin skills. Course contents include Basic Chinese Phonetics (Hanyu Pinyin System),
pronunciation, basic sentence structures, selected texts for reading comprehension,
vocabulary building, as well as for listening and conversational practices. Fundamental
Chinese character writing, sentence construction, aspects of grammar and Chinese culture
will also be introduced at appropriate points.

What is the learning outcome of this course?


1. Pronounce Chinese (Mandarin) phonetic syllables and the four tones;
2. Communicate in simple Chinese in selected situations;
3. Read the selected short texts fluently;
4. Read and write 120 selected Chinese characters; and
5. Construct short sentences in Chinese.
