1. A boy wants to throw a water balloon from a roof 5. A car travels around a banked racing track curve as
deck at a height of 3m from the street and hit the far side shown below. The curve has a radius of curvature of R;
of the street. He throws the ball at 5 m/s at an angle of the car is moving into the page.
45° to the horizontal.
If vboy = 0, what is the maximum height, h, reached by
the balloon above the street?
A. h = 5.9 m B. h = 5.1 m
C. h = 3.6 m D. h = 4.6 m
2. Two masses, m1 and m2, m1 > m2, are suspended by a massless rope over
a pulley (disk) of mass mP and radius rP. At time t = 0, the masses are
released from rest.
a) Demonstrate the free body diagram and the motion equation of the
system.
b) Calculate the acceleration of m1 and the angular acceleration of the
pulley.
c) Calculate the work W done on the pulley for the period t = 0 to t = t1.
3. A block of mass 7 kg is placed on top of a block of mass 10 kg, which in turn sits on a frictionless horizontal
surface, as shown in the figure. A force F = 20 N is applied to the 10 kg block, and the 7 kg block is held in place by a
string attached to the wall. There is static friction ( µ s=0.1) between the blocks, which keeps the lower block from
moving.
a) Demonstrate the free body diagram and the motion equation of the system.
b) Calculate the acceleration of the block 10 kg.
c) Calculate the tension T.
