Intercultural Communication

Experiencing Intercultural Communication provides students with a framework in wh

ich they can begin building their intercultural communication skills. Drawing from social psy

chological approaches, ethnographic studies, and recent critical media studies it places empha

sis on the practical, experiential nature of intercultural communication and provides solid, pra

ctical guidelines to help students approach the complexities of intercultural communication.

Capacity to communicate with people from diverse culture is refered intercultural

communication. Interacting effectively across requires perseverance, and sensitivity towards

others differences. This encompasses language skills, customs, way of thinking, social norms

and habits.

How can you achieve ICC?

Logical Reasoning/Personal Opinion:

Open minded – an open minded person is willing to acknowledge and explore

different ideas, cultures, perspectives, and concepts. They can accommodate different values,

even if they don’t align with their beliefs, having an open mind is an essential trait for

professionals, especially those that work with others.


Eliminate barriers- get feedback,to communicate more effectively start by collecting

information about the problems at hand. Avoid misunderstanding and mistakes by assembling

all the facts, commit to change -barriers to success often involve an inability to make good

choices.

Disintegrating stereotypes- stereotypes about race, gender, sexual orientation , age and

other personal characteristics shapes how, people perceive, interact with, and make decisions

about others. For decades, the way groups of people have been portrayed by the media.

Ethnocentrism- is the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of

ones own culture. Part of ethnocentrism is the belief that ones own race, ethnic or cultural

group is the most important on that some or all aspects of its culture are superior to those of

other groups.

Focused on how variance in cultural, symbols, values and behaviour affects communication

interactions across cultures. It is a misnomer that intercultural communication means

communication between different nations.

The Anthropologist Edward T. Hall, in collaboration with the linguist George L. Trager ,

established theoriginal paradigm for intercultural communication. Drawing particularly on (1)

the whorf – sapir theory of linguistic relativity and (2) Freudian psycho analytic theory.
1.Whorf-posits that language either determines or influences one’s thought. In other words,

people who speak different languages see the world differently, based on the language they

use to describe it.

2.Sigmund Freud's theory suggest that human behaviour is influenced by unconscious

memories , thoughts and urges.Theory also proposes that the psyche comprises three aspects

id, ego and super ego.

Edward T. Halls (1959) influential book,The Silent Language, and Hall is generally

acknowledged to be the founder of the field (Leeds-Hurwitz,1990;Rogers and Steinfatt

(1999). Hall was born in St. Louis, but grew up mainly in the American Southwest.

Personal Experience:

Without Intercultural Communication:

Focus on effective outcomes, on accommodation or adaptations, on identity negotiation and

management , on communication networks, on acculturation and adjustment.

Intercultural Communication at Home:

Helps people to understand their differences and find common ground, building stronger

customers relationship and a better brand reputation within business.

Intercultural Communication at School:

The capacity to communicate with people from diverse cultures is referred as intercultural

communication interacting effectively across cultural lines requires perseverance and

sensitivity to one another differences.

Intercultural Communication at Library and Classroom:


ICC entails interactions between individuals who possess distinct cultural differences

stemming from divergent histories, beliefs, and behaviours that can include non-verbal and

verbal language use.

Using Native Filipino & English

Filipinos use both Filipino or vernacular language and/or English in intercultural

communication .Its a problem for the foreigner if they cant understand the level of English

fluency of the Filipino he is speaking with.

Intercultural Communication in Everyday Life:

1.A christian conversation to Muslim.

2.A women receives an order from a man.

3.An American and African share their views.

4.A chinese politicians discussion with the leader.
