MECH610/PNEUMATICS & ELECTRO-PNEUMATICS

Module 5 (LAB) – Pressure and Combinational Valve

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, students are expected to:
C4. Use pneumatic and/or electro-pneumatic hardware and software to develop
complex mechatronic circuitry.
C5. Conduct simulations, analyze system output and formulate conclusions using
pneumatic and/or electro-pneumatic core theories and principles.
C7. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
C8. Lead multiple groups and projects with decision making responsibilities.

Specifically,
 Pressure Regulating Valves
 Pressure Limiting Valves
 Pressure Sequence Valve
 Time Delay Valve

Direction:
1. a. Perform the simulation below:

Problem Definition: Pots of paint to be labeled in a bonding fixture. The bonding

process is to be triggered via a pushbutton on the device.

A press-on time of 10s is required after reaching a pressure of 5bar in order for the
adhesive to take effect. The system is ready to start if the piston of the press-on
cylinder is in the retracted end position.

Additional Parameters:
• The working speed of the cylinder must be adjustable.
• The cylinder is to retract as quickly as possible.
• The cylinder positions must be monitored.
• The pressure is to be readable from a pressure gauge in front of the cylinder.

Simulation Task:
b. Design the equivalent pneumatic circuit diagram
c. Using FESTO modules simulate the circuit in the pneumatic workstation.
d. Compile the equipment list.

Positional Sketch:

2. Prepare a laboratory report with the following parts:

a. Discussion
Discuss the specific function of each device in the circuit depending on the
application. Do not discuss the general function of the device.
b. Result and Analysis of the Circuit
Draw the circuit used in the simulation with complete labels using FLUIDSIM.
Discuss the signal flow and how the circuit operates. Do not just discuss how
the devices are connected.
c. Conclusion
Write a conclusion regarding the pneumatic principles used to satisfy the
given specifications. Do not discuss the procedure of the simulation.
Explain the significance of the given task.
