Aim(s):

 Knowledge of vocabulary words related to astronomy and


space exploration

 The ability to skim a text for general ideas

 Identifying the topic sentence in a text

 To help students scan the text for specific information


(such as dates, names, etc)

 To help the students understand paragraph structure and the


difference between main ideas and supporting details.
warm up activity: while working in pairs ask the students if they
know the names of the planets in our solar system
Answers: The eight planets that orbit the sun are (in order from the sun): Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

New vocabulary: scientific terms related to astronomy and space:


galaxy, astronomy, liquid, NASA, solar system, Gravity, molecules.

Lead in (before reading): After new vocabulary words are introduced


and practiced, the students are asked to guess the topic of the text from
the title.

Activity 1 (vocabulary work): This task focuses on teaching the
students' new vocabulary words through reading and guessing their
meaning from the context.

 Task 1: Read the text and try to match the words in column A
with their correct definitions in B

Activity 2 (skimming): In this task the students focus on understanding


the general Idea of the text, they are asked to identify the main idea.
Then, topic sentences are explained by the teacher using different
examples before the students try to find it in the text.

 Task 2: Read the text and answer the following:

A. Find the main topic of the text

B. Come up with a different title for the text

C. Identify the topic sentence

D. Underline the main idea in each paragraph

-Then the teacher will discuss the answers together with the class-
 exercise: Ask two or three students to read the text out loud. Then,
while working in pairs they will come up with a topic sentence based
on the main idea.

 The students are given a few minutes to finish. Then, they'll discuss
their answers together with the teacher.

Activity 3 (scanning): After developing a general understanding of the


text as a whole, the students are asked by the teacher to identify specific
information such as important dates, place, names etc. This activity will
encourage students to use their ability of quickly scanning the text for
specific information in order to save time.
