Orchard Unit Problem

Unit problem:
We were tasked to solve our unit's problem, which was
about two people, Maddie and Clyde, who had an apple
orchard that was in the shape of a circle. They planted
their first row along an east-west line through the center of
the circle. The trees were equally spaced, except that they
left out the tree that would have been located at the exact
center of the circle. There are 50 trees to the west, east,
south, and north. All of the trees ended exactly at their
property line. They planted all the trees using the same spacing. They used each of the
trees in their north-south row as the center of an east-west row, filling in the orchard with
rows of trees. If all the trees keep growing then eventually you won't be able to see threw
the tree line. It would become a hideout.

Main question:
How soon after they plant the orchard will the center of the lot become a true “orchard
hideout?

Important information
● The cross-sectional area of a tree trunk increases by 1.5 square inches per year
● Right now, the tree trunks each have a circumference of 2.5 inches.

● The unit distance [for instance, the distance from (0, 0) to (1, 0)] is 10 feet.

● The last line of sight is the line that goes from the origin through the point (25,½)

Process:
So the first thing we did was find the points that the line would cross through which were
(1,0) and (49,1). We then found the midpoint between those points which was (25,0.5).
Then we set up desmos and put in the circle formula: and the line of sight formula: we
then put 0.5/25x and the reciprocal 25/0.5(x-1) in desmos and found the point where the
lines intersect. That point was (1,-0.9996),(0-0.02). Then we put those points in the
distance formula. And from there we got d=0.02. Then we found the feet by 0.2x10 and
inches by 0.2x12. From there we found the radius which was .397. And from there we
found AF=3.14x2.4^2=18.09^in2, AI=3.14X.397^2=0.495in^2. From there we found the
time it would take by 18.09=1.5x+0.495 you subtracted 0.495 from both sides and then
divided 17.595 by 1.5 which equals 11.73.

Solution:
So It would take 11.73 years for the trees to make a true hideout.
