Lesson Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
✓ Define what are New American Criticism and its two important concepts
✓ Explore the historical context and origins of New American Criticism
✓ Identify its proponents and usage.

New American Criticism (often known as New Criticism)

• It is a literary theory that emphasizes close reading and analysis of a text

as an independent, self-contained entity.
• It was a prominent literary theory that emerged in the early to mid-20th
century in the United States.

Reminder : New Criticism focuses on how something is being said, not

why, to determine what is being said. (StudySmarter)

Two Important Concepts of New Criticism according to StudySmarter:

1. Intentional Fallacy: The false notion that the author's intentions affect
the interpretation of a text.
2. Affective Fallacy: The malpractice of taking into consideration the emotional
and psychological reactions of the reader while interpreting a text.

The Proponents
According to Mambrol (2021), the American author and critic T. S Eliot played a
significant role in the early days of New Criticism. Mambrol (2021) added that John
Crowe Ransom, Cleanth Brooks, Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, Reni Wellek, and
William Wimsatt are examples of later practitioners and advocates.

As stated by Mambrol (2021), the early 20th century saw the birth of New
Criticism, which may be traced to the writings of the British philosopher I. A. Richards
and William Empson, one of his students.
