Suppose, the problem you have spotted is: COMPREHENSION.

How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty in
comprehension?
 I can assist my mentor by having a remedial sessions, to help those learners who
struggle in comprehension to cope up their basic needs. And always encourage
learners to read at home make it a habit, and if they don’t understand those deep
words look it in the dictionary or better search it using technology. In this way
they may be able to catch up to their peers with this further assistance. These
lessons aim to bridge the knowledge gap between students and what is expected
of them.

Explain: It is much better to offer various solutions to a single problem because that
would be easier for teachers to address the problems and guarantee that each learner
is being catered. When one solution does not solve the problem then it is easier to
select another one that would be more effective than the first one.

Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This scenario
might also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.

Scenario A:
Miss Fely is a grade four teacher in a typical elementary school. She has forty learners
in her class. One half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates and
invertebrates. She has been repeating the same science lesson for two weeks, yet no
progress was observed. This situation has been bothering Miss Fely.

 Can you identify, Miss Fely's problem?

Answer: It is evident that Ms. Fely’s problem is one of her child falls behind the rest of the class
although the ample time intended for the teaching of the said topic. Her main problem is that the
child has difficulty identifying classifications of animals.

 Can you find a solution to solve her problem? ____Give your two suggestions.

a. Maybe Ms. Fely can conduct Remedial Instruction.


b. She can also an Audio Visual Room because it helps the child to retain the concepts taught
through these aids, and also conduct demonstration to address the problem.

 What solution can solve Miss Fely’s problem? How? Are they matched with the problem?

Answer: The problem was matched by the two likely answers. One of the primary causes of the

Scenario B: Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his


learners come from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their
guardians who stand only as parents. They are deprived of the necessary food, clothing
and shelter.

• Can you identify the most probable teaching-learning problem/s in the class of Sir Ryan?

Answer: Lack of focus, because students are hungry and insufficient student motivation

• Can you propose a solution to solve one of the problems that you have identified?

Answer: The best solution that sir Ryan must do to help his learners focus in class, is to address the
hungriness of the students by orienting the parents of the children, about the effect of going to
school with empty stomach. And also sir Ryan must convince the school to ask help from the
government to have a feeding program everyday to those learners who badly needed the program.
In terms of motivation, Sir Ryan must share motivational quotes, stories, or videos every day
before beginning the class discussion. These things will encourage his students to value education

After reading the two scenarios given above, how would identifying problematic
situations and finding solutions to these problems help you to become a better teacher?

Answer: As a future educator it is very important to be observant all the time to


determine the problem and find for the solution as soon as possible. Allowing yourself to
become observant in your environment inside the classroom helps you become a better
teacher, because it helps improve your ability, skills and observe attentively. Aside from
that, it allows me to develop and comprehend the issues that commonly arise in
classrooms.

What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?

Answer: Base on what I have observed most students are afraid of participating in an
oral discussion or usually reluctant to talk in front of the class especially when English
language is the primary medium for the lesson.
REFLECT

What changes do you want to achieve?

Answer: I want them to conquer their fears because I already experienced it. I want to
help these learners garner confidence to speak up and converse confidently before the
crowd. I want to see them raising their hands when asked to answer specific problems
or even when just asked about their perspective on some matters. Albeit they’re some
of students that their primary language is English, but the comprehension was low. I
want them to try speak using our international language so that they can keep up with
their peers.

PLAN

Answer: I encourage collaboration such as peer tutoring.Offer extrinsic motivation for


students who would participate in class. Establish confidence for learners by assuring
them that their opinion is valuable and that mistake is accepted as there is always room
for improvement.

III. Abstract

It is conducted to improve reading comprehension with second grade and third grade students
by using the higher order thinking skills such as the predicting, making connections, visualizing,
inferring, questioning and summarizing. The teacher researchers gathered information in the
State Snapshot of Early Literacy which was given to students in second grade wherein identified
that 9 out of 16 students are below target level and the Test Ready test for third grade students
indicating that 10 out of the 17 students are at risk for reading comprehension. Thus,
interventions are of call.

IV. Identify the Problem in the Study

It was identified that students specifically the second and third graders are having difficulty in
their reading comprehension as discovered that more than half of the class failed during the
conduct of the Metacognition Strategy Index. It was found that there was a need to focus on
improving the reading comprehension of these said students with the focus on using the higher-
order thinking skills.
