Introduction to Metal Ornament Construction

Brief:
Construction of 3D metal ornament to be further used in the form of a brooch, buckle, charms,
pendants, pins etc.

Step 1:
 Extract ornaments from your desired theme.
 Analyze them in the form of elements and shapes to develop the variations of proto on paper
first.
 Practice origami techniques. First analyze the folds, bending ways, and discover various forms
 Explore 3D shapes and forms as much as you can extract.

NOTE: Use A4 papers, bleach card or tin foil to create 3D ornaments with the help of cutting knives to
extract negative spaces

Step 2:
 Final designed ornament should be detailed and a proper technical with measurements on coral
draw is developed.
 The ornament should not larger than 3 inches.
 This ornament is then printed and shifted onto the metal plate/sheet which is to be used in the
construction method.

Step 3:
 The metal ornament is cut manually with the methods of sawing and piercing.
 The ornament is completed with further texturing, hammering and molding techniques to
achieve the desired form.
 Define the source of attachment of the metal ornament onto the product whether it will be
attached by leather strings or chain or any other reinforcements.
 Finishing is done at the end

Ornament Description:
Extract ornaments from your required theme, you can use ornament
development methods to create different variations of your ornaments. For
example, additive, flip, rotate and segmentation method etc.
Neatly drawn elements and ornaments are required on A3 sheets.
Make sure you maintain the consistent line quality of the ornaments so that
they can be further developed into digital files with precision.

Material Required:
 Laptops with coral software installed
 Laptops should be well charged
 5 A4 papers
 Cutting mat
 Cutting knives
 Medium sized scissors
 Black and red pointers
 Complete pencil box

Ornament Description:
Your ornament should be printed on a paper in the form of an
ornament, you can develop a coral file and print it. It can be any accessory
you want to design for a bag. It can be a charm hung on a bag or your
personal logo for leather accessories, or an ornament which can become a
pendant.

Closures, charms, buckles, studs, charms, handles, straps, heels, tog locks, button, chain, logo, locks

You have to have Understanding about metal, what kind of material it is? What are the techniques to
develop the products/element?

Study the article to be created


Is it mass produced or exclusive piece, First develop prototype

How to cut, study the malleability and how it can be bent and fold.

Basic sawing and piercing ….. First exercise is origami


Research on origami (paper folding techniques)
First analyze the folds, bending ways, and discover various forms

Research “Mandalas” for reference


Whenever you start cutting, study the negative and positive spaces, for convenience do the color coding
method to direct yourself what to cut and what not.
Examples: Moroccan Lamps (to study cutting techniques)

For the design:


Positive negative spaces should be clear in the design
Origami, folds (practice)
On scale cutting is planned before and folds and creases are unplanned, can be practices after cutting
