Opening up the floodgates

Expect to see a lot of grain truck traffic here as CHS
Farmers Elevator in Glasgow was at pretty much full
capacity but got some grain train cars loaded up and now
has room for more. Tom Hoffman of Tom Hoffman Trucking
was among several truckers lined up on Thursday, and
trucks were already rolling in early this morning. We
forgot to ask Tom how he keeps that Kensworth so shiny
clean! No grasshoppers or bugs out any more would be
our guess. Oh, and thank you for your business, Tom!

Letter to the Buzz
Regarding the skate park
As a non-resident of Glasgow, I have used a lot of
the facilities that the city provides, as have our children.
Some of these facilities we have paid to use, others are
provicted free.
I’m not opposed to the proposed skate park, just
to the proposed site. I applaud the council for doing
more research into the proposed site. My question, and
I haven’t seen anywhere where other sites were looked
at, is, what about Hoyt Park?
Hoyt Park has everything: already there and
in one spot. You are getting a new state-of-the art
swimming pool, you have a nice picnic and play area,
and tennis courts. The civic center is next door and has
clean, maintained bathrooms. There is ample parking
available and no neighbors to disturb. It is also close to
the hospital for those times when kids need to go to the
ER.
Skateboards have been given as prizes to a variety
of kids. Are these skateboards available in town? (I must
admit I have not checked D&G). Are kids being advised
to use knee pads, elbow pads, helmets? Who is teaching
proper use and techniques of skateboarding?
I’m in town on a fairly regular basis and have not
seen a lot of people picnicking at Bundy Park. I have,
however, seen a lot of people picnicking at Hoyt Park.
Everything is there and from what I have seen, is well
maintained.
I want to thank the City for all the facilities that they
have provided for the residents of the city and county.

From Fish and Wildlife Commission
The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission will
meet Thursday, Dec. 14, at the State Capitol in room 317
and online via Zoom. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The meeting will be streamed live on the FWP website
and YouTube. The public can participate in person.
The commission will take public comment on
agenda items for registered commenters both in person
and on Zoom. Those who want to make a comment

 Niccole Ann (Ashpole) Naifeh 52, of Millington, Tennessee,
passed away on November 27, 2023, at Methodist North Hospital
in Memphis Tennessee.
Nicci was born March 11, 1971, in Racine, Wisconsin to
Marlene Ashpole. Cremation has taken place, Nicci was an organ
donor, she helped 4 people with the donation of her heart, liver
and kidneys.
Her son said that she would be crying with joy being able to
help people.
Nicci attended South Side Elementary School and Glasgow Jr.
High before moving to Tennessee.
Nicci leaves behind a daughter Candice Carroll of Drummonds,
Tennessee; 2 sons, Montana Forbess of Millington, Tennessee
and Dylan Ashpole of Suffolk, Virginia; Brothers Brian Ashpole
of Suffolk, Virginia; Donnie Ashpole of Pocahontas, Arkansas
and sister DeDee Hicks of Glasgow, Montana.
She is preceded in death by her mother Marlene and her
husband Johnnie Naifeh.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Glasgow falls to Red Devils

The Scotty girls opened its 2023-24 season with a
non-conference game instead of a District 2B contest
with Wolf Point, like it has been the past two years. The
Scotties traveled to Dawson County where they played
the tough Class A Glendive Red Devils.
The Scotties are on the road again this weekend
where they will participate in the Woodden Memorial
Tournament in Red Lodge. Glasgow will meet Big
Timber at 3:30 this afternoon and Joliet at 9:30 a.m.
Saturday. Friday’s game will be on KLAN and Saturday’s
on KLTZ. Big Timber whipped Park (Livingston) 66-
36 Tuesday night. Big Timber has a solid program and
the Herders are tough. Expect the Herders to give the
Scotties a good game.
Coach Cami Graham lost a few seniors that will
be hard to replace. So the Terry native is working with
a young squad. With only one senior, Kyndal Schraner.
Graham has four juniors, Tanae Baker, Macy Martin,
Riley Evenson-Glasoe, and 6-foot-1 Haydn Green. Joely
Chappell is the lone sophomore, Mayzie Yoakam, Gina
Page, and 5-foot-10 Paityn Britzman are freshmen.
Yoakam and Chappell saw plenty of varsity time
last year as eighth-grader and freshman, respectively.
Green also saw some varsity time. Look for Yoakam and
Green to be in the scoring column. The two have plenty
of support from their teammates.
The Scotties had a rough start against Glendive,
scoring only three points in the first quarter, trailing 12-
3. They had nine in the second, trailing 16-12. Glendive
led 34-27 and won with a score of 46-40.
Yoakam jump-started the Scotties in the second
half, scoring 14 points. She buried three 3-pointers
in the fourth period and completed a four-point play.
Green tallied eight points in the third as the Scotties had
15 points.
Yoakam had a game-high 17 points in leading the
Scotties. Green followed with 12 points, Chappell had
four points, Schraner three, Martin and Britzman two
each.
Codi Nagle had 12 points to lead the Red Devils.
Word has it that she’s a fun one to watch, and that will be
the Scotties’ first home game following the Christmas
break.
Scores around District 2B, Poplar thumped
Culbertson 85-51, took care of Box Elder 60-40 and
Rocky noy 74-37. Wolf Point edged BroWolves 44-23.

Phillips Coach of the Year

First-year Glasgow Cross Country coach Tim
Phillips has been named Montana Coach of the Year
in Class B girls cross country.
Phillips guided the Scotty girls to a second place
finish at the State Cross Country meet held in Kalispell.
Tanae Baker won the individual championship in Class
B. Phillips and all first-time winners will receive a ring
as an award.
Other girls cross country coaches to be named
were Anders Brooker, Missoula Hellgate Class AA, He
also won last year. Cindy Farmer of Hardin also won for
the second time. Jeff Nix of Sunburst won in Class C.
Boys’ coaches were Bob Stingley of Great Falls,
Roy McNabb of Browning, Karson Klass of Jefferson,
and Nate TeSlaa of Manhattan Christian. TeSlaa has
won multiple times.
Whitewater’s Char Wasson was also named Class
C Coach of the Year in volleyball after guiding North
Country to a third-place finish at the state tournament.
Other volleyball coaches receiving the honor were
Kelly Grossman, Billings West, second time; Kelsey
Torske, Hardin; and Iona Stookey, Huntley Project.
Stookey has won multiple times.
Football coaches taking Coach of the Year honors
were Levi Wesche, Bozeman; Zach McRae, Dillon;
Pat Duchien, Florence; Dwerek Geckle, Fairview; and
Michael Reiter, Froid-Lake.
Duchien won for the third straight year. Geckle
guided Fairview to the Class C 8-man title, while
Reiter coached Froid-Lake to a second place finish in
6-man.
Golf coaches winning the award were Jennifer
Arwine, boys golf of Missoula Sentinel and Marcus
Drange, girls golf at Billings West, For Class A it was
Cameron Milton guiding Polso to both boys and girls
titles.
Jay Anderson won for the second time for boys’
soccer, leading Missoula Hellgate. Erica Cannon of
Bozeman led the girls to a title.
Nolan Trafton led Billings Central to the Class A
boys soccer crown.
These coaches along with the winter and spring
sports winners will be honored at the 2024 Montana
Coaches Association Ceremony at 11:30 on August 1st
at CMR High School in Great Falls.
To win the award the coach must be a member of
the MCA. Congratulations Tim and Char!!!!
