Materials
Teacher will need a violin, a score of “March of the Metro Gnome,” and printed lesson plans.
Students need instruments and parts for “March of the Metro Gnome.”
Teacher will need some sort of wood block for the final performance.

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills for this lesson


Students should be able to play in G major.
Students should be able to read notation containing whole notes, dotted half notes, half notes, quarter notes in 4/4 time.

Content and Achievement Standards


Anchor Standard 8: Perform a varied repertoire of music by playing instruments, alone and with others, from rote memory
and written notation.
a. 6-8 (P.8.8.1) – Play accurate pitches and rhythms, as modeled and/or visually notated, in tune with a steady beat,
good tone quality, and appropriate technique throughout the known range of the instrument.
b. 6-8 (P.8.8.4) – Maintain pitch and rhythm accuracy, tone quality, tonal center, a steady beat, appropriate
technique, and appropriate style while playing unpitched, melodic, and harmonic instruments to portray the
composer’s intent.

Behavioral Objective(s)
At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:
• accurately play rehearsal F of “March of the Metro Gnome”
• define and perform detache bowing
• demonstrate how to increase dynamic level
• answer basic questions related to the music of “March of the Metro Gnome”

Procedures

0:00 Tuning: Start with basses on an open A


• Add cello, viola, violin
• Then tune D, G, C, E – ask students to sing
• Check bow holds and posture

0:03 Warm-Up: Have students echo 2 measure patterns in G Major


Open G string: MY/YOUR TURN
• Start with down bow: half, two quarters, half (all on open G)
• Start with up bow: same rhythm (have students shadow bow if necessary)
Explain detache bowing:
• Detache, separate bows for each note, a little bit of colle during the change (like taking turns)
Open G string:
• Same rhythm: G G A B
• With down bow, then with up bow

0:07 Play together the first four measures of F


• Repeat several times (check for bowings, pitches, and fingerings)
• Isolate V2 and violas, then V1

• Check starting notes

• Check starting notes
• Isolate bass, then cello
• Practice crescendo (explain how to add bow weight, pronation, like turning off the stove)
o Practice with a whole note on open G (MY/YOUR TURN)

Assessment of Objectives
Assessment will be informal and achieved by monitoring students’ posture, instrument setup, and technique during the
warm-up routine. Students will also be monitored informally during their performance of “March of the Metro Gnome”
to check for accurate rhythms, pitches, and tone production.
