Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses

Relative Clauses:

• Relative clauses give more information about a person or thing.


• They usually begin with a relative pronoun (who, whose, which, that, etc.).
• Relative clauses can be:
1) defining relative clauses, which give essential information that we need to know in order
to understand exactly which thing or person we mean.

Example: The instruments that Sasha restores are often very valuable.

2) non-defining relative clauses, which give extra information. We always use commas with
non-defining clauses.

Example: Sasha, who we read about earlier, has an interesting career.

Q1) Classify the following clauses into defining and non-defining clauses. If the underlined clause is
defining, write (D) next to it. If it’s non-defining, then write (N) next to it.

A) The animal, which has brown fur, is dangerous. ____________

B) The boots that were hidden are very valuable. _____________

C) Majd’s sister, who is very nice, won first place. _____________

Relative pronouns:

• We use which with animals or things.


Example: The cheetah, which has brown spots, is fast.

• We use who with people.


Example: The doctor, who helps people, is nearby.

• We use whose to show that something belongs to someone.


Example: Saif, whose brother is in college, likes engineering.

) • We use that with animals, things, and people.


Example: The football that had red lines was found.
❖ Notice that we only use that in non-defining clauses.
