WRITING SKILLS – ANALYTICAL PARAGRAPH

What is Data Analysis: Data analysis is the process of reviewing a given data to give some meaning to it and arrive
at a relevant conclusion - Analytical Paragraph. It involves making inferences on the relations studied, and using them
to reach a conclusion. Data analysis is the process of ordering, categorizing, interpreting, and summarizing data to obtain
answers to questions that are relevant. It is usually the first step taken towards data interpretation.
The process of data analysis uses analytical and logical reasoning to gain information from the data. The main purpose
of data analysis is to find meaning in data so that the derived knowledge can be used to make decisions. It is evident that
the interpretation of data is very important, and as such needs to be done properly.
In this writing exercise Analytical Paragraph, students are required to analyze a data given in the form of – Maps, Charts,
Report, line graph, etc.

Write your analysis in one paragraph within the word Limit of 150-200 words. This question carries 10 Marks in the
examination. Note that data interpretation methods are how analysts help people to make sense of data that has been
collected and presented.
The guidelines below will help you to structure your answer on the line graph given hereunder and present it in the form of
a paragraph. Focus on the right aspects given in the graph.
Line Graph: It is a graph with points connected by lines to show how something changes in value as time goes by, or as
something else changes.
Try to include all information from the two axes of the graph and the names of categories. Put all main trends in an
overview statement. Make sure you include the main increases and decreases shown in the graph. Use a range of
vocabulary and do not make spelling mistakes. Use different verbs and nouns, Use a range of adjectives and adverbs,
vary your time phrases.
Don’t always use expressions like: from … to … for the amount, etc. Sometimes you can make the difference using
expressions like: “it increased by double.., etc.” Put numbers or percentages to support your sentences in the paragraph.
Organise your paragraph logically so that it is easy for the examiner to read. This is not a rule, it is a strong
recommendation. If the line graph contains many lines and a lot of movement, be selective. You are being marked on
your ability to select key features. Don’t spend more than 20 mins on this exercise.

Question. You are a teacher at a reputed school in the city. The following bar graph shows a comparative
analysis of students‘ performance in different subjects in the terminal exam. Write an analytical paragraph on the
variation in the performances of students in about 100-120 words to be presented at the Annual teachers meet.

Answer.
The survey shows that the performance of students in different subjects in terminal exams. Maths and Science showed
some improvement in the second term with most students scoring higher marks. The scores in Maths and Science were
above 80 in the first term. However, in, Maths, most students scored above 90 marks in the second term. Students scored
between 60-70 marks in Hindi and English, which means more effort is required in the two subjects, especially in Hindi as
the students scored less in the second term. There was a marginal improvement in the second term marks in English a nd
Social Science. However, efforts must be made to ensure that the overall scores improve in the next academic session;
hence teachers must plan accordingly in order to help students score higher marks. Students must be given additio nal
practice so that more students score 100 marks in Maths and Science. This will help improve the school‘s performance in
the board examination.

Question. The following excerpt is taken from ‗The Times‘ on the ill-treatment of animals and steps to prevent it.
―It is distressing to see the attitude of people towards animals and find that cases of cruelty towards animals
are increasing. The following pie chart represents the attitude of people towards animals.ǁ As Simran/ Dhruv,
write the analysis of the above statement in 100-120 words.

Answer.
The attitude of people towards animals has been cruel since ages. A recent study showed that 50% of animals are
exploited by people for their self-interest. Animals are killed for their fancy and priceless body parts including the skin. It
was observed that 35% of people having an indifferent attitude towards animals do not care about their pain and
sufferings. They continue with their torture and experiments. Animals are beaten and forced to carry heavy loads.
Besides, to add to their woes, 15% of people believe that animals are their slaves. But men must not forget that animals
equally share the mother earth with us. If we can‘t help them, we don‘t have any right to add to their problems.

Question. The present generation is well updated in the use of the internet and computers. Let‘s look at the data
arising out of a recent survey that was done to ascertain the time spent on the utilisation of the computer and
internet for varied purposes. Write an analytical paragraph for the above bar chart in 100-120 words.

Answer.
The bar graph illustrates the time spent on the utilization of the computer and the internet by people in a month. According
to the survey, all five usage reasons – academics, personal use, e-mail access, work, and leisure – witness at least 50%
daily activity. It was observed that almost everyone use these facilities at least once a month for leisure, w ith 30% saying
they use them once a week. The data revealed that people use computers for work at least once and very few (less than
10%) never used e-mail. Computer and the internet for academic reasons on a daily basis are used by 50% of students
and over 20% stated doing so 2-3 times a week. There were only 2% who never used these services for academics. In
short, it can be stated that the internet and computer are slowly penetrating every field of life.

Question. The recent pandemic has had an adverse effect on every facet of life. ‗Young Minds‘ conducted a
survey to show how the mental health of young people has been affected during this time. 2,111 young people
took part in the survey which shows how the lockdown is not only impacting jobs and the economy but also
mental health. Write an interpretation in 100-120 words on how lockdown in the times of COVID-19 has affected
the mental health of young people.

Answer.
A recent survey conducted by Young Minds highlights the adverse effects of the 2020 lockdown. The study illustrates that
more than 25% of the people included in the survey felt depressed, which is indeed an alarming number. Adding to that,
almost half of the respondents admitted to feeling worse than before. A very small percentage of 15% claimed that the
lockdown made no difference in their well-being. Amidst the lockdown, only 13% claimed to feel better with more
relaxation and rejuvenation. In contrast to the large number of people who feel worse, those who claim to feel much better
are negligible. In other words, the survey is an indication that more needs to be done to ensure that the mental health of
people stays strong during emergencies. Comparing words (words in orange colour) should be included to score a perfect
score in analytical paragraph writing.

Question. A survey was conducted among the parents of the school going students. The question asked was,
―Should schools reopen in October?ǁ The results are shown in the pie chart below. Write an analytical
paragraph in 100-120 words.
Answer.
The given charts display the results of a survey conducted among the parents of school-going students regarding the
reopening of schools after the covid 19 pandemics. It is evident from the pie chart that 58% of parents are not yet willing
to send their children to schools. However, one-third of parents approved the reopening plans. More than 40% of parents
who are reluctant to send their ward to the temple of education stated that they did not want to take chance as social
distancing would not be possible in the school premises. Around 20% of guardians prefer the online mode of education.
On the other side, 15 % of parents trusted the vaccine and chose to wait till the vaccine comes. To conclude, schools
don‘t expect to be fully active as only 33% of the parents gave their consent to reopen the schools.

Example: 1-Critically analyze the line graph given below and write down your conclusions of it in a paragraph.
Answer: U.K Influenza: The graph illustrates how many people from the age of 65 and above were reported to have
contracted influenza in a particular village in the UK from 1985 to 1995. Overall, the number of cases of elderly people
with influenza increased over the period given. The highest number of people with the illness can be seen in 1991. In
1985, the number of cases of influenza stood at 40 and then rose steadily over the next three years to reach 55 in 1987.
In the following year, 1988, the figure dipped slightly to below 50 after which it rose significantly to reach a high of 75 in
1991. From 1991, there was a decrease to about 60 in 1993 of the number of reported cases of influenza. From this
point, except for a slight increase of about 5 cases, the number remained at about 60 at the end of the period.

Remember: Pay attention to: the content of each sentence, the use of verbs, nouns, adverbs and adjectives, the logical
order of information in the body paragraph. Use of connecting words like: overall…. Start sentences differently. Use a
fairly good range of vocabulary. No added external information.
This form of writing is used to interpret the facts presented in the form of table, graph or chart. A graph or chart is a visual
stimulus to depict the data. Analytical data interpretation requires an analysis and comparison of the given facts and
drawing conclusions based on the given data.
Question. Given below are the results of a phone survey of a group of 1000 students aged 13-16 carried out by an
education company to find out how effective online classes are. Study the data carefully and then write an
analytical paragraph to summarise the information. Make comparisons wherever appropriate and draw your own
conclusions.
Answer.The pie-chart based on a phone survey of 1000 randomly selected students shows how school students aged
13-16 years are taking their online classes. A majority of respondents (45%) take their online classes rather seriously,
which is a good sign for the newly introduced online education system. It also indicates that this age group is well-versed
in the use of the internet and online education platforms and applications. A little under one-fifth (18%) students said that
they do join the online classes but mute their microphone and camera, which makes online classes more manageable but
does not permit any interaction which is vital for any effective teaching and learning. Then there are those who do not
take the online classes seriously. Fortunately, this group constitutes only7%ofthe survey population. They make mischief
and disturb the class by writing funny things on their teachers' white board. While 15% of all the respondents said they
play games on their digital devices while their online classes are in progress, an equal number of students admitted they
do not study textbooks or do assignments on their own after the classes. Clearly, a lot needs to be done to ensure student
compliance before online classes become truly effective.

Question. The table below contains some information about climate change and air-pollution, their causes and
effects on the environment. Study the information carefully and then write an analytical paragraph to summarise
it in your own words.
Answer. Two of the environment’s most serious problems – climate change and air pollution can be blamed on Green
House Gases, mainly carbon dioxide, that cause climate changes with global repercussions, and Nitrogen Oxides,
Sulphur Dioxide, VOCs or volatile organic compounds and PM or particulate matter, which have mainly local or regional
effects. While climate change affects human health in an indirect way through the various effects of global warming,
airpollution has direct effects on human health causing such problems as breathing difficulties for healthy people, eye,
nose, throat and lung irritation as well as asthma, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and even death. These effects are
often short-term and almost always immediate whereas effects of climate change take a long time to manifest. The
climate change triggered by global warming is responsible for such environment problems as rising sea levels, and
airpollution, on the other hand, is to be blamed for problems like acid rain and smog. Burning of fossil fuels is responsible
for both climate change and air pollution.

Question.The given pie chart represents the amount of money spent by a family on different items in a month.
Write an analytical paragraph in about 100-120 words using the information given in the chart.

Answer. The pie chart provides information about the amount of money a family has spent on different items in a month.
On an average, the family has spent majorly on grocery which is twenty-three percent of the total expenses. Whereas it
has spent 20 percent on education which shows that it’s the second priority for the family. The other item on which it has
spent the most is clothes and transportation which levels off 19 and 18 percent respectively. Fifteen per-cent of their
expenses were on other items that might include stationery, cosmetics, accessories, etc. and the least they had spent
was on their rent. The maximum amount was spent on grocery, education, transportation and clothes. Overall the data
shows that they have not spent much on the unnecessary items or miscellaneous. After spending on grocery which is of
utmost importance they have spent a significant amount on education. The least money is spent on miscellaneous items
after spending on their rent which is their liability. Thus, it is evident that 85% of their total amount of money was spent on
their liabilities whereas only 15 percent was spent on other items that might not be necessary to spend on

Question. The given double bar graph shows the preferences of children in a school in playing different games
over the span of six years. Write an analytical paragraph about the given information.
Answer. The given double bar graph shows the preferences of children in a school in playing different games over the
period of six years i.e., from 2014 to 2019. The graph shows that the highest number of children, interested in playing
volleyball is in the year 2016 whereas in the year 2019, very less number of children preferred volleyball. The graph
shows a hike in the game of volleyball again in the year 2018. The data shows that the preference of people in basketball
is almost constant, like in the years 2014, 2017, and 2018 same number of children showed interest in it. Basketball got a
slight hike of interested children in the year 2016 but a decline has been seen in it in 2019 which is equal to 2015. If we
observe the graph we can see that children’s preference related to volleyball is continuously changing every year.
Although initially 200 children were interested in volleyball in 2014. Then it reached 300 in 2015, the greatest hike of 450
in 2016, but it again declined to 250 children in 2017, it again showed a hike of 400 children in 2018 and the lowest
number of children i.e., only 150 in 2019. Whereas basketball was much preferred in 2014 than volleyball. It shows a
decline of 100 children in 2015 but again reached 400 in 2016 and then remained same in 2017 and 2018. To conclude
the data shows that throughout the six years basketball was more preferred in comparison to volleyball. Although data
shows that volleyball has got the highest number of interested children in 2016 but the numbers are constantly flickering
which reached the lowest and is less preferred by the children in the year 2019 also.

Question. The pie chart shows the proportion of people from different households living in poverty in the UK in
2020. Write an analytical paragraph to describe the information in 100-120 words.
Answer. The given pie chart illustrates seven different categories of households living in poverty in the UK in 2020. It is
clearly evident from the pie chart that 26% of the total poverty-stricken households are those of sole parents. Single
people without children account for the second highest proportion with 24%. In contrast to couples without children that
accounts for just 9%, couples with children account for 15% of the poor households. Single aged persons and aged
couples’ proportion for 12% together for poor households. Overall, 14% of all households in the UK were living under
poverty. The younger generation had a greater poor percentage than their aged counterparts. Couples without children
had better economic conditions than those with children.
Question. The following table shows details about the internet activities for six categories for different age
groups. Write an analytical paragraph for the table given in around 100-120 words.

Answer. The given table suggests the internet activities of seven age groups ranging from teens to those in th eir
seventies for six different kinds of activities. The table shows that the younger generation is more interested in onli ne
games and news, while the older generation spends time on the internet to research and buy products. It is evident from
the table that teens mainly use the internet for games (as high as 81%), news and downloads and are interested in
searching for people or friends or doing any product research. The middle-age group (people in 20s to 60s) is highly
interested in getting news, doing product research and buying products, the percentage ranging from 70-80%. The
internet activity which gets the least time is searching for people. All the age groups spend less than 30% of their internet
time on the same. The amount of time spent on downloads decreases with age and gets as low as 6% (for people in 70s).
Overall, the table suggests that teenagers are most likely to spend time playing games and doing downloads. On the
other side, older people are interested in researching and buying products. People spend the least amount of time
searching for other people online.

Question. The given line graph provides information about changes in birth and death rate in New Zealand
between 1901and 2101. Write an analytical paragraph summarize information and make comparisons where
relevant in about 100- 120 words.
Answer.The graph shows birth and death rates starting from 1901 till 2101. Since 1901, the birth rate has remained more
than the death rate until 2041. Birth rate was 20000 in 1901 and started increasing gradually. It peaked in 1961 to around
65000. From 1961, birth rate has fluctuated multiple times between 50000and 60000. It is expected to decline for the
coming years reaching approximately 42000 by 2101.On the other hand, the death rate stood at around 10000 in 1901
and then has increased steadily. It is expected to rise strikingly from 2021 before levelling off to approximately 60000
between 2061 and 2081. The graph indicates a slight decline in deaths the year 2101. The graph indicates a slight
decline in deaths in the year 2101. The graph shows the huge gap between birth rate and death rate during 1961 to 2001.
However this gap is expected to reduce in the later years. Overall, as opposed to the prevailing trends, the death rate will
be more than the birth rate in the later half of the 21st century.

Answer. The given bar graph shows the usage of skin care products by men and women over the time of three mont hs.
The products used are facewash, toner and sunscreen. The bar graph of men shows that the most used product by men
is facewash. In the month of June the facewash was used around 33 times, in July 30 times and in August 35 times. T he
toner was used around 27 times in the month of June, 20 times in July and around 33 times in the month of August. The
sunscreen was used 29 times in the month of June, 25 times in July and 32 times in August. The bar graph of wom en
shows that the most used product is sunscreen. In the month of june the facewash was used 25 times, in July 22 tim es
and in August 24 times The toner was used 22 times in the month of June, in July 25 times and in August 27 times. The
Sunscreen being the most used product was used 34 times in June, 29 times in July and 35 times in August. To conclude
the given information, the usage of facewash by man saw a rise in the month of August and reached its peak and usage
of sunscreen by women saw its rise in the Month of August too, reaching its peak of 35 times of usage.
Question. You are the General Manager of a restaurant. You have noticed that the cost of seafood items has gone
up in recent times and this has overshot the budgets of raw materials procurement. Your supplier explains that
the supply chain of seafood items is adversely affected due to bad weather and a disruption in transport due to a
strike, and consequently the prices of seafood items have gone up. Write an analytical paragraph briefly
describing how the cost of procuring seafood items has overshot the procurement budget of the restaurant and
suggesting a solution to the problem in consultation with the restaurant chef and sales and marketing manager
such that the seafood continues to be on the menu but the restaurant does not incur any losses or lose valuable
customers to the competition. You might also like to introduce a new menu with attractive alternatives to
seafood.
Answer. The restaurant is finding it increasingly difficult these days to serve its patrons a range of seafood items like
prawns, shrimps, crabs, lobsters, oysters and tuna fish. While this may have left many of our customers disappointed, the
restaurant is unable to please them by overshooting its monthly budgets of raw materials for sea-food dishes. Our vendor
Messrs Bombay Seafood Suppliers have expressed their inability to provide these items at the existing rates owing to the
disruption caused in their procurement due to inclement weather and a transport strike. Faced with this predicament, the
restaurant has the following options – one, increase the prices of sea-food based dishes; two, offer smaller portions to
save on raw materials; and three, take away our customer's interest in seafood by introducing a fortnight long food
festival with a new menu of non-vegetarian items based on chicken, mutton, lamb and fresh water fish and eggs as well
as a whole new range of Indian and Chinese vegetarian menu, including regular South Indian delicacies. This will not only
help the restaurant save on its raw materials supply expenses but also keep our customers happy with a variety of
alternative food menu. This matter was discussed with the Chief Chef as well as the Food and Beverages Manager, who

weekend.

side, there were around 200 people who are likely interested in reading newspaper rather than watching television. It

reached 130 people in 2016. Overall, the graph shows that there is a huge decline in the use of television and newspaper
but there were still more people who were using newspaper in comparison to the use of television. However, the
excessive use of smartphones has declined the usage of television and newspaper. In 2016 television has become less
popular among people whereas newspaper is still preferred over television by many of them.

Answer. The 'Table' shows year wise percentage of attendance in four different types of schools of India. The percentage
of attendance is recorded with a gap of 5 years.
As it is clear from the given data, from 2000 to 2010 there is a steady and positive increase in the percentage of
attendance in all the four types of schools. The attendance in public schools is much higher compared to the other three
types of schools. Initially, the village schools show a noticeably poor percentage in attendance. At the same time, the
'General English Medium' schools witnessed less attendance than the public schools. All in all, the continuous higher
percentage indicates that the relevant authorities are concerned about improving the country's education. Therefore, the
'Government' must have taken an effective measure to improve the literacy in the villages.

shows the percentages in four countries, India, London, Italy, Russia. The data is shown in millions. Overall, the
proportion of women in higher education is increased in the four countries. In general, there were more female students in
1995 than in 1985, with more than half of women in higher education in all of the four countries. In addition, in four of the
countries, the percentage of women going into higher education rose. The most dramatic change was in India, where the
percentage is more than doubled. The least of all change was seen in London change. The only country where there was
no increase was Italy. Although the percentage of Australian women going into higher education remained the same.
Russia's highest percentage of women went for higher education, which sustained its position even after a decade.

Answer. Our world is suffering a great deal because of the rising problem of pollution. It is really painful to see the city
and its environment suffering for years. There used to be trees on the city roads. Also, a few vehicles were plying on
them. Life was peaceful and free. Now it has become a thing of the distant future. The smoke emitted by vehicles has
become a health hazard causing many respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis etc. Also, noise pollution has greatly
increased. The smoke being emitted from chimneys of factories contains poisonous gases like carbon dioxide and carbon
monoxide. These cause various breathingrelated problems and later serious diseases. The trees look diseased and
withered. The drains used to be cleaned. But now, they are seldom cleaned. Mounds of sewage are seen piled up on

calls for immediate steps by all of us to check the increasing environmental pollution. If immediate steps are not taken in

outside. It has made our lives easier. The Internet has various uses like communication, learning, exchanging information,
entertainment, etc. It is a milestone in the modern world of communication. It also plays an effective role in the field of
trade and commerce. Today ecommerce has become very popular with customers. Because online shopping applications
have brought a revolution in the world, which saves time and gives millions of options of one product at their convenience.

Nowadays, millions of people have access to the internet facility. But many people in some areas of the world still don't
have access to the Internet.

Question. The line graph shows Delhi Metro station passengers.Write an analytical paragraph on the information
provided by the graph and make comparison where relevant.

Answer. The line-graph depicts the number of people using a metro station in New Delhi over a given day of a year.The
number of passengers rises sharply in the morning reaching a peak of 1500 at 7 am. After the morning peak there is a
steady drop to 800 at around 9 am and less than 500 at 12 in the noon. After 12 there is a steady increase in the number
of passengers. 1000 passengers boarded the train at 3:00 pm .The evening brings a huge increase from 1200 at 4 pm to
almost 1600 at 5 pm. The number of passengers tapers off slightly after 5 pm, but falls quickly to 200 by 8 pm.
All in all, the time series show that the greatest number of passengers gather in the station early in the morning and also
early in the evening when it is their time to go to work and in the evening when they come back from work and take the
train to home. In between the travelling is less mostly by those who are going to or coming from some personal business.

Answer. The bar chart shows the percentage of females entering higher education in the years 1985 and 1995. The chart
shows the percentages in four countries, India, London, Italy, Russia. The data is shown in millions. Overall, the
proportion of women in higher education is increased in the four countries. In general, there were more female students in
1995 than in 1985, with more than half of women in higher education in all of the four countries. In addition, in four of the
countries, the percentage of women going into higher education rose. The most dramatic change was in India, where the
percentage is more than doubled. The least of all change was seen in London change. The only country where there was
no increase was Italy. Although the percentage of Australian women going into higher education remained the same.
Russia's highest percentage of women went for higher education, which sustained its position even after a decade.

Answer. Our world is suffering a great deal because of the rising problem of pollution. It is really painful to see the city
and its environment suffering for years. There used to be trees on the city roads. Also, a few vehicles were plying on
them. Life was peaceful and free. Now it has become a thing of the distant future. The smoke emitted by vehicles h as
become a health hazard causing many respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis etc. Also, noise pollution has greatly
increased. The smoke being emitted from chimneys of factories contains poisonous gases like carbon dioxide and carb on
monoxide. These cause various breathingrelated problems and later serious diseases. The trees look diseased and
withered. The drains used to be cleaned. But now, they are seldom cleaned. Mounds of sewage are seen piled up on
thoroughfares. Thus the city has become unfit for healthy living. It is all due to increasing environmental pollution. This all
calls for immediate steps by all of us to check the increasing environmental pollution. If immediate steps are not taken in
this direction, the world may soon become unsuitable for living.
Question. Write an analytical paragraph on whether the Internet is useful or not based on cues given below.

Answer. The Internet is a modern international computer network system. It is an interconnection method that makes
access easy from anywhere. Internet is one of the greatest creative and popular inventions in the history of science. Its
functions are easy and quick. A number dialled from the computer and a link to the Internet will soon connect to the
outside. It has made our lives easier. The Internet has various uses like communication, learning, exchanging information,
entertainment, etc. It is a milestone in the modern world of communication. It also plays an effective role in the field of
trade and commerce. Today ecommerce has become very popular with customers. Because online shopping applications
have brought a revolution in the world, which saves time and gives millions of options of one product at their convenience.
Nowadays, millions of people have access to the internet facility. But many people in some areas of the world still don't
have access to the Internet.

Question. The line graph shows Delhi Metro station passengers.Write an analytical paragraph on the information
provided by the graph and make comparison where relevant.

Answer. The line-graph depicts the number of people using a metro station in New Delhi over a given day of a year.The
number of passengers rises sharply in the morning reaching a peak of 1500 at 7 am. After the morning peak there is a
steady drop to 800 at around 9 am and less than 500 at 12 in the noon. After 12 there is a steady increase in the number
of passengers. 1000 passengers boarded the train at 3:00 pm .The evening brings a huge increase from 1200 at 4 pm to
almost 1600 at 5 pm. The number of passengers tapers off slightly after 5 pm, but falls quickly to 200 by 8 pm.
All in all, the time series show that the greatest number of passengers gather in the station early in the morning and
also early in the evening when it is their time to go to work and in the evening when they come back from work and
take the train to home. In between the travelling is less mostly by those who are going to or coming from some
personal business.
