SECTION 1 : VOCABULARY

1) What does the word ‘rivulet’ mean ?

2) ‘Ajji saw the perplexed look on her face.’ What does the
word ‘perplexed’ mean here ?

SECTION 2 : SHORT WRITING (80 - 90 words)

1) How did Nooni spend her time in Balepura ? What all did she
experience ?
She enjoyed the sound of the rivulet,
the croaking of frogs, a variety of
insects buzzing around, the rustling
dry leaves and much more. What a
strange but beautiful world, she
thought.
‘Oh! I remember Mahadeva told me about Gangamoola, but I don’t
know much about it.’

‘Gangamoola - the birthplace of three important rivers. The Tunga,

the Bhadra and the Netravathi. They flow through the Sahyadri
range of hills,’ Vikram explained. ‘The Netravathi flows westwards,
whereas the Tunga and Bhadra flow eastwards. It will be great fun
if we go and see those places of origin.’
She ran back to her room and started getting ready. She
wore jeans with a T-shirt, a sweater and a range jacket
over it. Her backpack had a book and a pen, a bottle of
water, a camera phone - even though the signal was
unreliable, she could still take photos - and a first-aid box.
‘My dear children, welcome to the Western Ghats - a
World Heritage Site.’

‘Is that like a GI tag?’ asked Nooni.

‘No. This is much more. A World Heritage Site is a

designated area under the protection of UNESCO. The
area or landmark is preserved for having cultural,
historical, scientific or other significance. The Western
Ghats are a natural world heritage site. They are God’s
gift to the world. I am sure you will enjoy this experience.
I will come along with you.’
‘Why is it called Gangamoola?’ Nooni asked Seshu.

‘A river is essential for civilisation to exist and to

prosper. That is the reason ancient civilisations around
the world were built along riverbanks. Take the Indus
Valley Civilisation as an example, which was built on the
bank of the river Indus or Sindhu, or the Egyptian
civilisation, which developed along the river Nile. That is
the reason the Ganga is revered in India. So we worship
every river as another form of the Ganga. Moola means
“origin.’’ So Gangamoola means “origin of the river”.
They drove till the Kudremukh National Park and started to hike
towards the forest office, with Mahadeva in the front and the
children at the back.

The walk was not steep but slippery. They used sticks to help
themselves keep steady. The view was beautiful, with tall trees, a
variety of shrubs and flowers in different hues. The air had a
distinct scent from all the plants, trees, flowers and seeds.
Butterflies of many sizes, with many patterns, flew around. The
mist was still lingering, while sunlight gently tried to intrude. But
the slightest wind blowing by made them shiver. Nooni thought they
did not need any other music here, for nature itself played the
sounds of music.
‘Ajja, you mentioned GI tag yesterday, what is that ?’

‘GI stands for Geographical Indication. It refers to

products that grow in a specific geographical location or
origin. For example, Nanjangud is a place near Mysuru, on
the Kapila river. The quality of the soil there is distinct,
and that makes the bananas extremely sweet. That’s why
they are called Nanjangud rasabale.’
Gopal Rao’s house was quite a big one. There were large
teak-wood pillars at the entrance. The house had a tiled
roof, red cemented floors and two benches made of stone
on either side of the main door. Chappara - entrance
decorations - and rangolis were already put up.

1) IDENTIFY WHETHER THE 2 PARAGRAPHS BELOW ARE

DESCRIBING OR EXPLAINING SOMETHING -

a) She immediately asked them the meaning of Malenadu.

In old Kannada, male means ‘hills’ or ‘mountains’ and nadu means ‘land.’ So
Malenadu is the land of hills. Geographically, it is entirely different from the
flat lands of Somanahalli’, said Ajja, chewing his paan.

b) The light blue flowers covered the entire hill range, almost like a huge
carpet. Once the mist settled down, she was able to see those beautiful
flowers clearly and clicked as many pictures as she could.
