History of Bung Karno's exile in Bengkulu

The Ministry of Education and Culture's Cultural Site reported that Bung Karno was exiled to
Bengkulu after being thrown into Bandung's Sukamiskin Prison. Bung Karno was arrested on
December 29 1929 along with two other figures, Maskoen Soepriadinata and Gatot
Mangkoepradja.

After Bung Karno became independent, the Dutch government at that time decided to exile
Bung Karno to another place that was much more remote and difficult to access. After being
exiled to Ende, East Nusa Tenggara, Bung Karno then moved to Bengkulu in 1938.

While in Bengkulu, Bung Karno lived in a house owned by a Chinese businessman. The house is
in Anggut Atas Village, Bengkulu City. As reported by detikSumut, this house was discovered by
Bung Karno himself when he first came to Bengkulu and was looking for a place to live.

Bung Karno occupied the house for approximately 4 years until 1942. There, Bung Karno lived
with his wife at that time, Inggit Garnasih and his adopted children, Ratna Djuami and Hanafi. It
was also in Bengkulu that Bung Karno was said to have known the figure of Fatmawati who
later became his wife in 1943.

During his exile in Bengkulu, Bung Karno continued to show his tenacity in voicing the struggle
for Indonesian independence. Bung Karno read a lot of books, motivated the local community,
renovated the mosque in Bajak Village, and even created a performance group called Monte
Carlo.

Bung Karno created the music and drama performance group with the aim of attracting youth
and instilling nationalist values through music and drama. He also interacted a lot and built
discussions with religious figures, especially the leadership of Muhammadiyah Bengkulu.
