Letter of Continued Interest 2

Dear Mr. Felton and Ms. Karim,

I would like to thank you for considering my application, and encouraging me to write another
email update on my activities. I would like to assure you once again that Cornell is definitely my
dream school, and I will definitely attend if given an offer from the waitlist!

During the past two summers, I have been working at the LIT Hotel in Bangkok as a part time
worker. I approached them initially wanting to gain valuable experience regarding work in an
actual hotel. I was assigned various jobs during each day, to get experience with every aspect of
the hotel. This included, but was not limited to: washing the floors, tidying up a room and
preparing it for the next customer, scrubbing the toilets, cleaning kitchen grease, tracking down
missing towels, and even manning the front desk once or twice! It was hard work, but befriending
the janitors and other workers made the entire experience a lot more fun. This was an incredibly
rewarding experience, and I intend to work at the LIT Hotel once more this summer.

I also visited my favorite student at the Thai Deaf Foundation, Curly, who reminded me to always
face life with a smile. Her infectious optimism inspired me to apply for work at the Thai
Department of Tourism, where I was accepted for a summer internship! I’ll be involved in a
project dealing with environmental conservation efforts in Thai hotels, and learning about hotel
design and construction from industry professionals. I am thrilled to intern with the Department
of Tourism, because as my interviewer Donn tells me, Thailand’s tourist industry may be in a
slump currently due to COVID restrictions, but analysts like Nikhom at Horwath predict that the
industry will resurge in a few years – right around the time I graduate. Getting hands on
experience with hotel design and environmental conservation from a Thai perspective will
definitely help further my ambitions of building my own hotels along the Andaman Coast.

Since my sophomore year of high school, I have also been working as a paid programmer for
China Systems (Thailand) Co. Ltd. This final activity was definitely a grueling one – I was
introduced to the pressures of company deadlines, and the need to stick to a strict list of
specifications to meet requirements. This experience has taught me to appreciate good
scheduling and time management, because missing a single deadline can compound your
workload and put crushing pressures on you. I’ve also learned the biggest rule of programming
at China Systems – Simplicity is a virtue. Simple and understandable code is important when
working in a team. Programming in a team means communication is paramount, so you must
consider others in everything you do – a lesson which can be applied in all facets of everyday life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely,

Ike
