PRACTICE PAPER 03
STRAIGHT LINES AND CONIC SECTIONS

Time Allowed: 1 hr Max. Marks: 30

Q1 to Q2 of 1 mark, Q3 to Q6 of 2 marks, Q7 to Q8 of 4 marks and Q9 to Q10 of 6 marks

1. Find the centre and the radius of the circle x2 + y2 + 8x + 10y – 8 = 0

2. Find equation of the line perpendicular to the line x – 7y + 5 = 0 and having x intercept 3.

3. Find the equation of the hyperbola where foci are (0, ±12) and the length of the latus rectum is
36.

4. Find the equation of the ellipse, whose length of the major axis is 20 and foci are (0, ± 5).

5. If the lines 2x + y − 3 = 0, 5x + ky − 3 = 0 and 3x − y − 2 = 0 are concurrent, find the value of

k.

6. Find the equation of the line passing through the point of intersection of the lines 4x + 7y – 3 =
0 and 2x – 3y + 1 = 0 that has equal intercepts on the axes.

7. Find the distance of the line 4x – y = 0 from the point P (4, 1) measured along the line making
an angle of 135° with the positive x-axis.

8. A beam is supported at its ends by supports which are 12 metres apart. Since the load is
concentrated at its centre, there is a deflection of 3 cm at the centre and the deflected beam is
in the shape of a parabola. How far from the centre is the deflection 1 cm?

9. A person standing at the junction (crossing) of two straight paths represented by the equations
2x – 3y + 4 = 0 and 3x + 4y – 5 = 0 wants to reach the path whose equation is 6x – 7y + 8 = 0
in the least time. Find equation of the path that he should follow.

10. Prove that the product of the lengths of the perpendiculars drawn from the points ( a 2  b 2 , 0)
x y 2
and (− a 2  b 2 , 0) to the line cos   sin   1 is b .
