Student Engagement (Authentic Assessment)
Student Engagement (Authentic Assessment)

Research has consistently shown the positive relationship between student engagement
and authentic assessment. For instance, a study conducted by Lashbrook and de Oliveira
(2020) found that students who were engaged in authentic assessment demonstrated
higher levels of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as greater motivation
and interest in the learning process. Additionally, another study by Rui and Yuan (2020)
revealed that authentic assessment can enhance students' self-efficacy and self-
regulated learning.

Student engagement is critical in authentic assessment, as it promotes a deeper level of learning and
a more comprehensive understanding of the material being taught. Authentic assessments require
students to apply knowledge in real-world contexts, which can increase their motivation to learn and
lead to a greater sense of ownership over their education.
According to Reeve and Tseng (2011), engagement refers to “students’ active participation in
academic and non-academic activities inside and outside of school” (p. 3). In authentic assessment,
engagement can be observed in students’ willingness to actively participate in the assessment
process, such as conducting research, collaborating with peers, and presenting their findings.
One study by Lombardi and Oblinger (2014) found that students who were engaged in authentic
assessment showed greater levels of critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. They also
reported higher levels of motivation and satisfaction with the learning experience. Another study by
Xu and Chen (2018) found that student engagement in authentic assessment was positively related
to their academic achievement.
Overall, student engagement in authentic assessment is crucial for promoting meaningful learning
experiences and developing important skills that can be applied in real-world situations. Educators
should aim to design assessments that are challenging, relevant, and meaningful to students, and
provide opportunities for students to actively engage in the assessment process.

Research has shown that authentic assessment, when coupled with student
engagement, improves students' critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and
overall academic achievement (King, Goodson, & Rohani, 2014). Additionally,
students who are engaged in authentic assessment are more likely to take
ownership of their learning and develop a deeper understanding of the
subject matter (Moss & Brookhart, 2012).
