Topic 13 Sport in Our Life

The ancient Greeks always said that a healthy mind in a healthy body is the key
to a well balanced life. People all over the world are fond of sports and games
which make them healthy, fit, more organized and better disciplined.
Moreover, sport unites people of different classes and nationalities.

There are outdoor and indoor sports, winter and summer sports. The most
popular outdoor winter sports are ice hockey, skiing, skating and tobogganing.
A lot of people greatly enjoy figure-skating, snowboarding and ski-jumping.

Summer gives us excellent opportunities for swimming, boating, yachting,

cycling and other sports. Football is the most popular outdoor game for people
to play or watch as spectators. This game is played in all the countries of the
world. The other favourite games in different countries are golf, tennis, cricket,
volleyball, basketball and so on.

All the year round many people go in for boxing, wrestling, athletics, fencing,
gymnastics and track-and-field events. Some people prefer doing extreme
sports and activities such as motor-racing, skydiving or bungee-jumping to get
some excitement and adrenalin in their blood.

A lot of people do sports because they want to train their muscles, to stay fit
and healthy or to lose weight. All necessary facilities are provided for them:
stadiums, sports grounds, swimming pools, skating rings, skiing stations,
football fields. People can join well-equipped gyms or sport clubs where they
can exercise with the help of well-qualified instructors.

Sport is paid much attention to in our schools. Physical Education (PE) is a

compulsory subject and a very important part of the school curriculum. It’s
well-known that students these days spend long hours studying. They need the
opportunity to do some physical activity during the school day. This does not
only help to increase their level of fitness and make them healthier, it also
helps students develop their social skills and concentrate on their studies for
longer and achieve better results.
