Hello everyone, nice to meet you. I am Nguyen Thi Duong Ngan from Binh Thuan province.

When I
first decided to apply for this university, I wasn't intent on becoming a lawyer because many people
said that only rich individuals who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth could pursue this
kind of job. However, I gradually became attracted to the field of law and started researching the
process of becoming a professional attorney. I find this information deeply useful for all of you as it
directly affects your future career.

Today, I will show you the process to become a lawyer in Vietnam and compare it to the process in
the United States. In Vietnam, you need to obtain a Bachelor of Law degree, which takes around 3.5
to 4 years for the first degree and 2 to 2.5 years for the second degree. After that, you need to
complete a one-year Legal Professional training Course at the Judicial Academy. Following this, you
need to spend the same amount of time in a law firm or partnership for training and also take a Bar
exam. These training courses can be shortened if you have already held specific positions in the law
field for a certain regulated period. Finally, you need to apply for a Bar Association to obtain a license
to practice law. You can choose to be a sole practitioner or work for a law firm based on your
preference. Overall, the education system in Vietnam requires 5.5 to 7 years to become a lawyer.

In contrast, if you want to obtain a Bachelor of Law degree in the US, you need to have already
graduated from other universities or academic institutions. It is helpful to have a fundamental
knowledge in a law-related field. Additionally, you need to take a particular test called LSAT to study
at a law school, and your first law degree is called Juris Doctor. After graduating and passing the Bar
exam, you will receive a Bar card to practice law legally. So, in the United States, people spend at
least 7 years to become an attorney.

Generally, both processes are complicated and require a significant amount of time and money.
