SWING
Look at how high the ball is

only possible way I can make

this flatter swing – allied to

this by opening the face and

to be part of any brand’s
sales spiel. Talk always centred
around generating maximum spin
and stopping power, heightening
feel and generating ultimate
shot-to-shot consistency.
But recently, wedge spin rates
when the grass, ball or club are
exposed to moisture have become
a fiercely contested battleground.
Ping first put wet wedge
performance on the map with the
HydroPearl finish on their original
Glide wedges in 2015 – it now
features on all of the brand’s irons
and wedges. HydroPearl (today it’s
HydroPearl 2.0) dissipates moisture
faster than other finishes, which
Ping say evens out performance in
both wet and dry conditions.
TaylorMade go at things
slightly differently. They say
their laser-etched Spin

Finally, Mizuno say

spin differences between
wet and dry conditions.
With such very different
ways of controlling wet to dry
wedge performance, which
should you believe delivers
best for your game? To find out,
we put all three to the test.
How we did it
We asked TG Test Pro Neil Wain
to hit a dozen dry shots (using a
premium ball) with the Ping Glide
4.0, TaylorMade MG4 and Mizuno
T24 wedges. And to show how the
three models compare against the
market leaders, which don’t make
big claims about improving wet
weather performance, we did
exactly the same with the latest
Titleist Vokey Design SM9 and
Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore. Once all
the dry shots were hit, we sprayed
each ball three times with water,
before Neil hit them all again.

allow approaches to land and stop on the dancefloor, this is a brilliant option for 2023.
TG VERDICT We love that TaylorMade have kept the Stealth name for the HD model; it means
that you don’t feel left out of the cool gang or get unfairly labelled as a sub-standard golfer, playing a
different marque. Yes, the look is much more hybrid iron than Mizuno’s sleek HL, but everything about
the head and shaft selection scream easy launch and forgiveness at sub 75 mph speeds.
TG VERDICT We’ve said for a good few years now that if you can stomach them, use hybrid
irons as they’re more forgiving and easier to launch. Eleven take the idea a step further; this is a set
of hybrids, not hybrid irons. The model is not for everyone, but if your game needs maximum help or
your swing speed is slipping, our data highlights how Eleven could be a brilliant choice.
Srixon ZX MK II | £279
TG VERDICT ZX fairways and hybrids have impressed in our test sessions over the last few years,
and the new MK II, with its slightly larger, more friendly looking head shape, continues the trend. It was

WELCOME
This is our second batch of
English county rankings and it
is again packed with insight
and knowledge from golfers
who have incredible breadth
of experience in each one.
These lists please me
enormously because we are
shining a light on literally
hundreds of very, very good
courses that don’t often find
themselves in the spotlight.
The focus is thus on the entries
that don’t feature in our other
rankings, namely the GB&I and
England lists. The start of each
ranking is taken from the way
they fall in the GB&I/England
lists but, be assured, the quality
remains incredibly high as we
move through each county.
Numerous golfers – ostensibly
our GB&I and England panellists
– fed into the county lists but I
was also reliant on county experts,
who headed up the ‘local’ input.
I am indebted to them and proud
of what we have produced. They
were: Lancashire – James Reader,

– Adam Lawrence, Marcus

The Wilmslow Golf Club
#VTWGIGOCOQPI%JGUJKTGoUIQNƂPIFGUVKPCVKQPU
Established in 1889, a James Braid designed course that has a rich history and is
a top choice for golf in Cheshire, especially during the winter months.
Nestled in the heart of Cheshire, the Championship course is a testament to the
timeless beauty of parkland layouts. The legacy of Sir Nick Faldo's 6th European
Tour win in the early 1980s is interwoven into the very fabric of the course.
Wilmslow also hosted Open Championship Qualifying in the early 2000s and
more recently, a European Tour Legends event that marked the return to golf
after the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.
Measuring close to 6700 yards, the course offers golfers an almost heathland feel
as they traverse the fairways and embrace the gorgeous Cheshire countryside.
The jewel in the crown is the 18th hole, a risk-and-reward masterpiece that runs
alongside the meandering Mobberley brook, which weaves its way through the
whole course. But that's not all; the collection of four fantastic par 3s, with two
on the front nine and two true crackers on the back nine, sure to delight and
challenge golfers of all levels.
Convenience is key The Wilmslow Golf Club is just 15 minutes from the M6
motorway and a mere 10 minutes away from Manchester Airport. You can tee
off and touch down without a hitch, making your golfing journey as smooth as
a well-struck putt!
The JCB Golf and Country Club reflects the bold, ambitious vision of Lord Bamford, Chairman of the iconic construction
and agricultural equipment manufacturer - JCB. Set amid the lush green rolling countryside of Staffordshire,
the 7308 yard, par 72 course has been designed and constructed to the highest specification, challenging elite golfers at full distance.
