Introduction
Door locks are inevitable parts of our everyday life. They allow us to let authorized people in and
keep intruders out. There are different kinds of door lock available in the market. The lock and key
based door is one of the poplar and widely used door lock systems. As most manual based systems
are on the way of being replaced by digital technology, door locks are certainly one domain for
this replacement. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) on the other hand is on the way of
replacing barcodes with its capabilities that extend far beyond the scope of barcodes. It is used for
applications ranging from identification cards to tags for tracking labelled objects [2]. Our system
that will be built based on RFID will allow users to have a door lock that can be customized
according to their needs.

Problem statement
Traditional lock and key based door lock systems can become insecure when more and more
people gain access to enter. There are enormous incidents where keys are passed among people
and waiting for a person with a key wastes valuable time. Duplicating the key for every user might
also allow users, whose access has been revoked, to keep duplicates of the key which by itself can
be another source of insecurity.

Research question
mproved?
How can the door lock system be designed in such a way that the owner can customize it according
to his needs?
Hypothesis
Use of RFID combined with password authentication increases the security and accessibility of
traditional lock and key based door locks. Our system can provide the user with customizable
features.

Literature Review
Umar [1] has developed an RFID based door lock system for Punjab University hostels that
combines Low Frequency RFID (LF RFID), an embedded microcontroller and a computer system
(for image recognition) that supports ten users. Users are registered by storing their images and
corresponding RFID on the system. RFID code matching is done on the microcontroller whereas
the image recognition takes places at the computer where a neural network based algorithm is
trained to recognized faces of people. The system offers a three-layer authentication. On the
detection of unauthorized attempt, the system sends an SMS notification and turns on an alarm.
rity. If the person
trying to enter is authorized a relay powered solenoid opens the door. In [2], a similar system with
fewer features has been proposed. It only uses RFID and GSM module (for SMS notification) with
an embedded microcontroller. Benjamin [3] has designed door lock system that makes use of
Westminster Christian Fellowship (WCF) building that can be used to lock up to six different doors
with in the building. The system needs a server in addition to an embedded microcontroller. It is

have a way of notifying intrusion or unauthorized access rather it only denies access. Focus is
given to avoiding false positive. Gyanendra [4] has also proposed an RFID based system that
combines it with a database, where queries for authenticity take place. If the person is authorized,
then the timestamp is logged. The proposed system uses a general purpose computer instead of an
embedded microcontroller for processing retrieved RFID information and controlling the door
opener.

Objective
The objective of this project is to design a door lock system, that improves the lock and key based
one, that can be customized according to the preferences of the person in charge (owner) and that
m. Our system aims to make door locks
secure and flexible, putting less burden on the security guard.

Methodology
Circuit design for interfacing components of the system
Develop code for Arduino
The above tasks will be accomplished by simulating the system in a circuit simulation package.
After designing the circuit, a computer program will be written for Arduino whose sketch can then
be loaded to the Arduino serially. The system will store the RFID codes of every user upon
registering the user. when the user passes his RFID tag through the RFID reader the system will
look for that code in its memory and will also require password (if password is set as a compulsory
authentication). If password authentication is set as optional the system will let the user in by either
reading his tag or checking the password, entered by the user. If any act of intrusion is detected
the system will notify authorities by turning an alarm on and sending SMS notification.
The tools that will be used for developing the system are:
Hardware tools
Arduino UNO
RFID tags
RFID reader
Servo Motor
Phone Keypad
LCD display
Keypad encoder
GSM module
Speaker
Software tools
Arduino IDE
Proteus 8
Due to the unavailability of hardware needed for the system it will only be simulated in Proteus.
