HW04: ANALYSIS OF THE BAROQUE SPACE

In HW04, you will analyze the principles of Baroque space, by answering both questions below:

What is the relationship between the observer and observed in the Baroque space?
What are the spatial components constructing this eye-based relationship?
(You may also state about the main transformation in the viewing angles of observer in space while passing
from the Renaissance to the Baroque age. You may add some information about the changing role of the
observer in urban scape in the Baroque age.)

a) Select a Baroque space (architectural or urban) and analyze it by showing the architectural or urban Giovanni Battista Gaulli, The Ceiling of Gesù Church
principles peculiar to the Baroque architecture and urbanism on the images of the building or city scape (1568-1580), Rome, Italy, 1679
with illustrative markings. Exterior façade photos, interior photos, plan, section, perspective drawings for
the building, and maps, aerial photos and perspective drawings for the urban space can be utilized.
b) Write the related keywords to define the principles of the Baroque architecture/urbanism with these
markings as well as the answers of the above questions.
c) You can work in .ppt (PowerPoint), .ai (Adobe Illustrator) or .psd (Adobe Photoshop) formats.
d) Submit your work on the Moodle system, in .jpeg or .ppt formats under the tab of Assignments, HW04.

• You may re-examine the lecture presentation to find out the architectural principles of the Baroque
period, or you may make research in academic sources to enhance your knowledge on these principles.
• You may make your markings legible and understandable in an analytic quality by adding some short
descriptions.
