ENTRY HIGH SCHOOLS EXAM

To ensure entry to the Selective entry high school exam,


please ensure that your child has:
1. A printed copy of their admission ticket

2. Photo identification

3. Two blue or black pens

 The exam is to be held on Saturday 15 July 2023


 This letter provides you with general information about the exam and your child’s
designated location.
 Please note that the exam is held in multiple locations, this letter is relevant to your child’s
venue.

What to bring
Candidates MUST bring:
 A printed copy of their admission ticket
 One form of acceptable photo identification which is no more than 18 months old.
Examples include:
o student card issued by your child’s current school
o student travel card
o class photograph (with your child and their name clearly shown)
o passport (passport photo must be no more than 18 months old)
o library card (with photograph)
o Keypass card
o a photograph that has been signed and stamped by your child’s current school
o a certified copy of a photograph that details your child’s name and date of birth.
How do I obtain a certified copy?
 Two blue or black pens (new pens are recommended to avoid ink running out during
the exam)

Candidates may also bring:


 Each candidate is permitted to bring one small bag into the exam venue. The bag
should be small enough to fit underneath their desk without spilling into walkways.
 A silent analogue watch is permitted to be kept on the desk. Some time increments
are announced during the exam, however a student may rely on their own time
management throughout each test.
 A clear plastic water bottle with no label
 A snack in a clear plastic bag (ensure that all snacks are nut free).
 Face mask (face coverings will need to be removed at registration for the purpose of
identifying the candidate)
 A small bottle of hand sanitiser

Items NOT permitted in the exam
 There are certain items that are not allowed near candidates during the exam. Such
items must be placed in the candidate’s bag. These are:
o mobile phones
o smart watches
o fit bits
*electronic devices must be switched off completely and out of
reach while candidates sit the exam.

 The following items should not be brought to the exam venue:


o calculators
o translation devices or dictionaries
o headphones
o audio or recording devices of any kind
o paper
o highlighters
o rulers

 Mobile phones must be turned off completely (not placed on silent mode) upon
entry to the exam building and for the duration of the exam. Candidates must not
have access to their phone during the exam. Phones may be accessed and switched
on only when candidates leave the exam venue.

The exam
 The exam takes approximately three hours to complete.
 With breaks and time allowed for instructions, please allow for up to 3.5 hours from
the exam start time before candidates leave the exam venue.
 The exam comprises of a series of tests including multiple choice questions and
written tasks:
o Reasoning – Reading (35 mins)
o Reasoning – Mathematics (30 mins)
o Short break (20 mins)
o General ability – Verbal (30 mins)
o General ability – Quantitative (30 mins)
o Short break (5 mins)
o Writing (40 mins)
 Prior to commencing each test, candidates will have the opportunity to sit practice
questions to ensure they have an understanding of what to expect in that test.

Exam Day
Unable to attend the exam
 If your child is unwell on Saturday 15 July 2023 they should not attend the exam.
 You can apply for your child to sit the exam on a designated alternative date by:
- completing the Illness/Misadventure Form
- photographing or scanning the required supporting evidence
- uploading the form and supporting evidence to the application portal
by Tuesday 18 July 2023. Requests made after this date will not be
considered.

Arrival procedures
 Candidates must provide their printed admission ticket upon arrival. They
cannot be admitted without it. Printed admission tickets must be displayed on
candidate’s desks during the exam.
 Candidates should arrive within one hour of, and no later than 30 minutes prior to, their
designated exam starting time.
 Candidates will not be admitted to the venue MORE than one hour prior to their exam
start time.
 Parents/carers will not be permitted entry to the exam venue at any time and
cannot attend the registration desk.
 On arrival, candidates will have their admission ticket checked against their online
application. Registration clerks will check identification and log ID against the
candidate’s online application.
 Candidates will then be directed to their exam space.
 Candidates will sit at numbered desks. The candidate must place their admission
ticket below the desk number. Supervisors will check desk numbers against
admission tickets as candidates are seated. Students will then receive verbal
instructions.

Departure procedures
 Parents should pick up candidates from the same access points used for drop off or
as agreed prior.
 Candidate departure may be staggered to aid with traffic management and ensure
safe movement of candidates and vehicles.
 Whilst all candidates in a building will finish the exam at the same time, it will take
some time to safely release all candidates for pick up, so please be patient.
 You must follow the directions of all traffic personnel in order to safely return
candidates to parents/carers and avoid traffic congestion.
 Please remember that candidates will not have access to their mobile phones until
after they access the exam venue.
 In pick up and drop off zones, parents/carers are required to stay in their vehicles.

Additional information
 Temperatures can vary in different exam venues. Candidates are advised to wear
layers to the exam so that they can add or remove layers depending on their
preferred temperature.

Arrival and departure advice for Moonee Valley Racecourse
The Moonee Valley Racecourse is situated between Wilson Street, Dean Street and
Feehan Avenue in Moonee Ponds.

Arriving by public transport:


 The use of public transport is strongly encouraged to avoid traffic congestion.
o Tram: Route 59 and 82 stops at the Moonee Ponds Junctions which is 800
metres west of the Moonee Valley Racing Club.
o Train: The Moonee Ponds railway station on the Craigieburn Line is
approximately 1 km west of the Moonee Valley Racing Club
o Bus: A number of bus routes run to and from as well as through Moonee Ponds.

 Pedestrians can enter the venue from Gate 2 on Feehan Avenue.

Arriving by car (drop off):


 A ‘drop and continue’ system will be in operation on Feehan Avenue next to Gate 2.
 To access this area, cars must travel South on Feehan Avenue towards Dean Street.
 Please follow ALL instructions from traffic personal to allow for safe movement of
candidates. Candidates will exit vehicles as directed by traffic personnel and they will
then be directed to their building. Vehicles will immediately continue South-bound on
Feehan Avenue.
 Parents/carers are NOT to exit their vehicle at any time.

Arriving by car (parking):
 Moonee Valley racecourse has ample parking on the inside of the race track.
 Access to the car park is from Gate 6 on Dean Street and Gate 7 on Wilson Street.
Follow signs to the entrance.

 Traffic personnel will direct cars to parking bays.
 Parents/carers are welcome to stay in their car for the duration of the exam or leave
their car and access the Moonee Ponds shopping area.
Accompanying candidates to the venue
 Parents/carers are welcome to accompany candidates to the building entrance
points.
 Parents/carers are not to enter the exam building at any time. Use of bathrooms for
example will not be permitted.
 If accompanying students to the building, please be mindful of not creating
congestion around the entrances. Please say your farewells away from the
thoroughfare.
 Parents/carers are advised to leave the exam venue grounds for the duration of the
exam so as not to create any disturbance for candidates.
Candidates finding their exam entrance:
 Candidates will have a room name printed on their admission ticket. Entrance to the
Celebrity Room in through the Foyer. Entrance to all other rooms is through the
Members’ Enclosure. Look for signs around the venue.

Candidate pick up:
 The exam venue grounds will be congested with parents collecting candidates after
the exam. It is strongly recommended that parents arrange a meeting point with their
child ahead of time.
