GenChem1 Performance Task
GenChem1 Performance Task
GenChem1 Performance Task
Objective:
To explore the pH levels of common household substances and identify whether they are acidic,
neutral, or basic using household items and create a visually engaging presentation of your
findings.
Materials:
Red cabbage leaves (or pH paper if available)
Household substances (e.g., lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda, soap, milk, water, orange
juice, and any others you want to test) NOTE: each group must have different
substance!
Clear glass containers (e.g., glass jars or cups)
Pen and paper for note-taking
A digital camera or smartphone for documentation
Safety goggles (if using potentially harmful substances)
Procedures:
1. Prepare Red Cabbage Indicator:
If using red cabbage leaves, chop them into small pieces and boil them in water for
about 10-15 minutes.
Strain the liquid into a container. This liquid will serve as your pH indicator.
2. Label Containers:
Label the clear glass containers with the names of the household substances you are
testing.
3. Collect Samples:
Pour a small amount of each household substance into its corresponding labeled
container.
4. pH Testing:
Using a dropper or a clean straw, add a few drops of the red cabbage indicator to each
container with the household substance.
Observe any color changes in the indicator after it mixes with the substance. Red
cabbage indicator turns different colors in the presence of acids and bases.
5. Record Results:
Take notes of the color changes observed in each container and compare them to a pH
color chart (you can create this as part of your project).
Determine whether each substance is acidic (low pH), neutral (pH 7), or basic (high
pH).
6. Create a Presentation:
Develop a visually engaging presentation using a digital tool (e.g., PowerPoint, Canva,
or video editing software).
Include photos of your experiments, a summary of your results, and a clear explanation
of the pH scale.
Explain the importance of understanding the pH of household substances.
7. Discussion:
In your presentation, discuss the potential uses of this knowledge in daily life, such as
cooking, cleaning, and personal care.
Evaluation Criteria:
Your at-home chemistry challenge will be assessed based on the following criteria:
