J.S. Park
At the age of only 32, J.S. Park is already the most successful Asian footballer of all time.
His exceptional (出類拔萃的) talent, fitness level and work ethic (職業道德) have all made him
a desirable asset (理想的財富) for football teams around the world.
Park was born on 25th February 1981. Although many sources (來源) incorrectly report that
he was born in Seoul, the South Korean capital ( 首 都 ), he was in fact born in Goeheung and
grew up in a suburban town ( 郊 區 小 鎮 ) approximately 30 km south of Seoul. He began to
develop an interest in playing football during his fourth year of elementary school ( 小 學 ). He
became known as one of the most promising (有前途的) new talents in South Korea and
attracted the attention of several different clubs. However, when he reached high school, he was
rejected by (被…拒絕(申請) a number of professional clubs and universities due to his
relatively (相對) small stature (身高). His coach encouraged him not to give up on his dream
and recommended him to the coach for the Myongji University team, where he was accepted.
Within a year, Park had been selected to represent his country. He made his debut (首次登
場) for the national team (國家隊) in a match against Laos (老撾). Park’s talent on the field soon
took him away from his native country (祖國); first to Japan in 2002, then to the Netherlands (荷
蘭) and finally in 2005 to the UK when he was bought by Manchester United for a fee of
£4 million. He became the first Asian player ever to serve as captain of the team. During his 7
years at Manchester United, Park played in over 200 games.
In 2011, Park announced (宣佈) his retirement from international football, stating that he wanted
to make room for younger players ‘with enormous potential’. Nevertheless (儘管如此), his fans
in Asia and worldwide remain loyal as they continue to follow his career in club football with
interest.
